About the Author

Nick Bland always told family and friends he was going to be a cartoonist and a writer, and he began his career in children's literature to bring those two loves together. He is the illustrator of I Lost My Kisses and the author of The Wrong Book, The Very Itchy Bear, and A Monster Wrote Me a Letter. He lives in Darwin, Australia where he also works as a guardian for 120 aboriginal boarding students.

This is one of my daughter's favourite books. She's almost 2 and enjoys hearing the story almost daily. We have read it so many times that she knows most of it off by heart and will start reciting it randomly around the house, in the car, at the store...
I don't mind that we've read it so many times though, because it is a very cute book and lots of fun to read. The illustrations are great too.

This book is cute and quirky and the rhyming makes it fun to read out loud. I first bought this book when my son was 9 months old. I was pleasantly surprised as it was the first little kid book that kept me interested and giggling myself. My son, unfortunately wasn't too into it at the time, I guess the story was a little too extensive for a 9 month old. I was disappointed when I would pull it out at bedtime and he would shake his head and ask for itsy-bitsy spider with it's one line pages.

The fault is not in the book but the age I tried to introduce the story. By the time he was 18 months old, this book however became his favorite. I love reading it to him while making different voices for each animal. We laugh every time.

If you buy this book....you will not be disappointed by it!

Four friends were enjoying themselves in cave one day when they were disrupted by a cranky bear. Immediately, Moose, Lion, and Zebra came up with a solution to their problem. Each one assumed that the reason Bear was so cranky was that he was so very plain. He must be jealous of their beauty. So they set to work trying to make Bear as beautiful as them.

The Very Cranky Bear is a fun story with an important message. Often we assume that we know the problem but don't bother asking. Sheep comes up with the perfect answer by listening and doing something to actually help Bear.
