This is a darling book. The pictures are just darling. However, it was rated for baby/preschooler. My baby is 11 months, and while this book is gorgeous, my daughter can not match up the pictures. There are words next to the "house" picture, like barn, burrow, cave, etc. But there are none next to the animals. So at first, I was thinking that the squirrel or the bird could live in the tree. But then I realized that the animal matches it house. (The turtle is green/the shell is green; the fish is blue/the water is bird.) Over all, it is a nice book, and I am glad we got it. My four year old enjoyed it a lot more than the baby did. Even my older kids had fun matching up the pictures.

A Matching Game, Not a Story, but a Fun and Durable One, May 29 2009

Another of Carle's beautiful collage renderings of animals and their homes, this one is a flip-book. Each page is split into an upper and lower panel, and the reader finds the home (top) that matches the animal (bottom). Unlike other manipulative board books, this type doesn't depend on glue or sliding panels, and is unlikely to come apart (at least not quicker than regular board books). Because of its "puzzle" aspect, it could be good for adult-moderated problem-solving skills in younger children, and self-entertainment in older ones. It's a matching game, not a story, but it's worth acquiring if you can find it for a good price.

it's my fault - i didn't realize that when i bought it, that it was a 'flip book' - the child has to match the animal with its home... still a good book
