Gail Brewer treated me like her own daughter. She was studying at UCSF, they just moved out from upstate New York. They drove out and used a pickle jar to pee in instead of using the public bathroom and making someone clean up after them. I think that's about the same year the Babysitter's Club series was launched.
Mrs Brewer used to tell us stories on the way to school, even getting an advantage like starting the tomatoe plants early in the greenhouse to get more money. I used to walk up Clarendon Ave to see Cornelia Brewer where they lived in grad student housing. One day on the way up to see Cornelia, some guy in VW bug asked me for directions, it was the same guy asking kids around the city if they had seen a puppy. Kidnapper, duh. Dad said I should have gave the guy directions. Adults aren't supposed to ask kids they don't know. Dad was a criminal prosecutor for 11 years and former cop during the Black Panther years in Oakland.
It must have been alot of work to move all that furniture from back East. One time Mrs Brewer said she was down to the last $10 until the next paycheck, but it didn't mean anything. It used to be fun to play in grad student housing there, better than the new housing, it was built in the 70s. Mrs Brewer accepted me. My dad brought over a pizza and wine. Cornelia wanted to eat the beer foam.
