Product Description

From Amazon.com

There are two ways of combating the blazing misogyny of gangsta rap: with water or with fire. Journalists, teachers, and ministers have been trying to douse the flames of sexism with intellectual and moral arguments. The reasoning is persuasive, but it's doubtful it reaches rap's hard-core young audience. For that crowd, you have to fight fire with fire, and that's just what the female rap trio Salt 'N' Pepa have done so successfully with Very Necessary. With their explicit rapping about bedroom gymnastics, Salt 'N' Pepa are unlikely to be held up as role models in classrooms or churches anytime soon. For a sexually active teenage girl, however, the trio shows how you can get your pleasure without putting up with any disrespect. Salt 'N' Pepa's hit singles "Whatta Man" and "Shoop" are both sensual appreciations of the men they like, but the album also contains some hilarious, pitiless putdowns of the men who don't treat them right. --Geoffrey Himes

4.0 out of 5 stars the best salt 'n' pepa album// release a greatest hits CD!!!, Jan 24 2004
By
Rickie Mack (College Park, Georgia United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Very Necessary (Audio CD)
Very Necessary is not only the the best selling Salt 'N' Pepa album (5x platinum), but their best period. This cd also won them a grammy for the song "None of your business" and is the best selling album by female rappers (solo or group) EVER. (Lauryn Hill's "Miseducation" cd is mostly singing) I can still listen to this CD now and enjoy it. What is really needed NOW is a Salt 'N' Pepa digitally remastered greatest hits CD with great photos and extensive liner notes. There are too many greatest hits CD's from undeserving artists with 2 or 3 hits when S'N'P has at least 12 major hits. Enough on that... bottom line this cd is hot.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic and a must own., Jan 4 2004
This review is from: Very Necessary (Audio CD)
This is one of my favorite albums. I grew up listening to Salt-N-Pepa throughout the 80's and 90's. This album rules. I love it when Ellen Degeneres sings "Shoop" on some her her comedy specials (example : DVD - "Here and Now"). I mean, the song is about men, and Ellen is a lesbian (no harm meant) and I think it is funny. I wonder what ever happened to Salt-N-Pepa. Did they split up or just left the music business?

This was one of the best Salt-n-Pepa CDs ever. Full of fresh tracks and in your face lyrics... and you can dance to it.
