A disappointing conclusion to a wonderful series.,

This review is from: Vicar of Dibley a Holy Wholly (DVD)
I am a HUGE fan of Vicar of Dibley and have loved (and bought) everything that came before this "happy ending." Having gotten to know and love all of Dibley's characters (including the vicar herself) it seemed really odd to have some new guy who has no charisma and isn't funny join the ordinarily quirky and hilarious group of characters. The whole point about Geraldine is that she has an amazing sense of humour and fun, and is surrounded by nutty people. This guy is boring and seems humourless and doesn't seem to click with her personality at all. I found it entirely unbelievable that Geraldine would fall in love with him (beyond the fact that she is attracted to him physically) so that left me feeling very uncomfortable with the romantic relationship. It also means I had none of the feelings I was supposed to have--namely, finding them adorable as a couple and being glad she had finally found her life partner. I also question the feminism of this conclusion to the series in that it seems that Geraldine is just desperate to marry herself off and is grateful that anybody (but particularly a supposedly handsome and suave guy) has finally asked her. There is a good dose of humour but the plot and point of these final episodes is dull and unfortunate. For other fans of the series, you needn't think this is essential viewing or necessary to feel a sense of closure. A sad conclusion to an otherwise brilliant Britcom.
