Their influences range from the Beatles and Radiohead to Ween and Nirvana, yet the music they create has an inexplicably original sound and vibe. Always willing to experiment creatively, the Waking Eyes often rotate their instrumental duties, but maintain a core set-up with Rusty and Matt playing guitar and singing, Steve on the drums, and Russ playing bass. Piano, organ, and other keyboards are often used to provide the songs with the band's signature sound. The Waking Eyes consider their ability to pen catchy pop-rock songs as their most important asset and with all four members cited as contributing writers they have a seemingly endless supply of new material from which to draw.

My Eyes Now Wide,
By Bryan Moyer (Welland, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Video Sound (Audio CD)
Wow... Just wow... With music these days, you hear so much and it all sounds the same, and it's so very tempting to just throw up your hands and wonder why you're bothering... then, all of a sudden, SMACK, you get hit in the face by something so seething with energy and vitality like The Waking Eyes. This bullet out of Winnipeg has been leaving a wake of awakened and revitalized towns behind them... I'm lucky enough to say they hit up a town near me and I saw them perform Watch Your Money and some Beatles tributes... It was a nigh spiritual experience. Every note they play DRIPS with courage and rebellion... Just listening to their music, you know it's rock, but there's SOMETHING different about it. I came to realize it's that they don't write just two strings of music... verse refrain... they don't go retreating back to the chorus to avoid having to actually play, they treat every chord and every beat as an oppurtunity, and by god, do they SIEZE IT!!You don't understand... BUY THIS ALBUM!!! BUY IT!!!! IT WILL CHANGE EVERYTHING!!! These guys are IT!!! Some songs are clearly inspired by the Beatles, and its down with reverence and utmost respect, others are just... man... how do you describe it? What inspires the mountain side to harbour a forest? What inspires the horizon to call forth the dawn? Whatever force it is... you can feel it licking at you within the music of the Waking Eyes. They woke me up... and I wont ever go back to sleep... I can't.

Decent...,

These guys are pretty good. Out of Winnipeg, Manitoba, The Waking Eyes are Canadian. I enjoyed all their singles, being: "Watch your money," "Beginning" and "On a Train." But besides that, most of the other songs I didn't find that great. Besides their singles, I liked "Headlights." I would've given this album 3.5, but you can't do that; hey, I rate high...Anyways, all in all a decent album from The Waking Eyes.
