Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

It is permitted to disapprove of Keith Jarrett, despite the years of adulation which have accumulated behind his peculiar brand of virtuosity which somehow juggles spontaneity with an almost preternatural awareness of form. However, even his detractors can usually be persuaded to agree that this particular solo piano disc is an essential item. Opinionated, assertive and with a strong collaborative instinct, Jarrett nevertheless seems to function best when left to his own devices. There have been plenty of other recordings of the pianist's solo performances, of which The Sun Bear Concerts--a galumphing set of six CDs or, originally, 10 LPs--is perhaps the most often alluded to. Even on his own terms, though, Jarrett has had his faults. If he realises he's taken a performance up a blind alley, he will, notoriously, often carry on regardless rather than suffer the indignity of abandoning an idea. His expositionary passages can be laboured, self-conscious and almost patronising in their sheer over-statedness. When he manages to leave all this baggage at home, however, his melodic sense, beautifully monstrous harmonies and structural inventiveness are unsurpassed. This disc preserves just such an occasion. --Roger Thomas

Chronique amazon.fr

5.0 out of 5 stars best jarrett, Jan 21 2004

jarrett's best solo concert. this is profound stuff; relentlessly serious, this is perhaps not the place to start if you like your grooves or jazz improvisation (i.e left hand comps right hand solos)- try lausanne or koln for the best of the earlier concerts. it is also very beautiful - the first 20 minutes see jarrett in full concentration at an ecstatically slow tempo. the concentration never lets up; the assault on the keyboard that follows is no less appropriate or beautiful (in its way) and the final section is beyond description. for me this 40 minute track is an independent entity, a complete success without needing a follow up. all i can say to finish is that the second track is in no way anticlimactic, and i consider the overall result to be the equal of any jazz or classical music (which it is probably more similar to) that i've heard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, pure music, Jan 14 2004
By
This review is from: Vienna Concert (Audio CD)
When I first listened to Vienna Concert, I was a bit disappointed because of two things. (a) The first 20 minutes or so was very repetitive. (b) Nothing noticable happened, or so it seemed. What I later found out, when I had listened to it three more times, was that the first 20 minutes actually are very beautiful. The details come out much more clear after listening to it more and more.

After the first 20 minutes, the music chances direction leading to some very fast playing that is both funky and harmonic. The piece ends with a gospel-like mood. The second part of the concert isn't as good as the first part, and as another reviewer says, the first part is complete in itself. But that piece also has some good points. If I were to pick a favorite among the Keith Jarrett concerts I have listened to (Bremen/Lausanne, Köln Concert, Vienna Concert), it would be Bremen/Lausanne, but in second place comes this concert. I especially like it for its pureness and completeness. After listening to it, you'll most probably be calmer, happier and stuff like that. Music that contrast modern pop music.

3.0 out of 5 stars What's with all the hype?, Jun 12 2003
By

This review is from: Vienna Concert (Audio CD)
I had read all the reviews previously feeling that the album would be a great listen. But after picking it up and listening to it I cant agree with the rest of the reviewers.
The first piece starts off nicely the first 9 or 10 minutes, but then it starts to get repetitive as if he was getting really bored with the music. The second track was not bad but the overall performance was not anything special to me. Ive listened to the album twice and I think thats enough for me.
If your just begining to listen to solo Keith music make sure that you do not pick this one up. The best albums to start with are (Koln Concert) (Standards Live vol.2,or 1),(Paris Concert) and my personal favorite (Staircase) which has truly beautiful moments in his work.
