I love the fabrics and style of Christina Strutt which is why I purchased this book as soon as I saw it through my book club. The book is lovely. However, I wish I had known that this was merely a new cover on old material. I didn't see any mention of this in the writeup for the book before I purchased it. The author released the exact same book a few years ago only it was called Decorating Vintage Style (with a Country Living logo in the top corner of the cover).
As I was flipping through the new book, the photos looked very familiar so I checked my personal library and there it was... the same book, same photos in the same order and same page numbers only a different cover photo and title. I'm disappointed that this was not new material from Ms. Strutt and I feel a bit mislead by the publisher so I'm giving it 2-stars for those points only.
If you don't already have the original book in your own library, this "re-released" edition is worth more stars. The photos and material are beautifully presented and if you are already a Christina Strutt fan you will enjoy it. Unfortunately, I'll have to send my new copy back because as much as I love the content, I don't need two copies of the same book.
Chapters in this book cover the romance of vintage, vintage kitchens, living spaces, bedrooms, retreats & hideaways and creating vintage style. Elements detailed in the photos include Strutt's gorgeous faded floral fabrics, blue and white seaside ticking, painted furniture, chipped crockery, vintage books, skirted sinks, nature's accessories (lemons, eggs, garden flowers etc.) glass decanters, slipcovered chairs and ribboned pillows.
If you like this whimsical, fetching style, it's a lovely book for a side table. The charm of the cover is a beguiling hint of what you will find inside.
Apart from the above, I highly recommend Vintage Chic to those who, like me, love the very pretty, romantic, English style of decoration. Christina Strutt designs lovely, dreamy, pastel floral fabrics, and in this book she shows how they can be used in every room of the house and even in the garden.
Sad to say, I was underwhelmed. There just wasn't much spark to this book. A lot of the photos were blah, lacking in inspiration, and worse looked somehow dated. We like Christina's subtle color palette, but here it seemed a lack of creative daring. Instead of a decorating book I will pour over and study happily for months--which is what I did with Romantic Home Sewing--it's a flip through and a 'trip to the Goodwill' sort of reaction.
I'm am very thankful to the reviewers here who gave me the heads-up that this is a reprint.
