Book Description

July 1 2011
Popular as never before, romantic country style is here to stay. Vintage Chic inspires you to create this timeless and accessible look in your own home. Exquisite textiles in faded colours and patterns are used to great effect to evoke memories of old roses, charming ancient cottages and endless summer days. Masterminded by Christina Strutt, founder of textiles firm Cabbages & Roses, her room-by-room tour reveals a myriad of ways to make the most of fresh colours, faded fabrics and flea market finds. Moving through the main areas of the home, from living rooms splashed with soft

florals, to kitchens overflowing with mismatched glass, crockery and cushions and to dreamy rose-pink bedrooms, the book also includes

romantic hideaways and retreats – entertaining in the country garden, a converted train and a child’s secret tree-house. These are interiors in which to retreat and relax, an embodiment of comfort and charm that creates an oasis of stylish calm, whether you live in a country house or apartment block.

• Vintage Chic embodies quintessential country style and reveals a way of living that is truly elegant, relaxing and beautiful.

• Gorgeous photography by Edina van der Wyck.

• Christina Strutt’s Home-made Vintage has sold more than 30,000 copies and Guide to Natural Housekeeping has sold more than 35,000 copies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loads of ideas! Nov. 23 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This was a great book. I purchased it when decorating a new home and it provided me with lots of great ideas for decorating and for storage. I wish there were a list provided of stores that sell shabby chic materials. Other than that minor issue, I'm glad I bought this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Old book, New cover Oct. 13 2011
By LisaTO - Published on Amazon.com
This is re-released material wrapped in a new cover. It would have been nice to know that upfront.

I love the fabrics and style of Christina Strutt which is why I purchased this book as soon as I saw it through my book club. The book is lovely. However, I wish I had known that this was merely a new cover on old material. I didn't see any mention of this in the writeup for the book before I purchased it. The author released the exact same book a few years ago only it was called Decorating Vintage Style (with a Country Living logo in the top corner of the cover).

As I was flipping through the new book, the photos looked very familiar so I checked my personal library and there it was... the same book, same photos in the same order and same page numbers only a different cover photo and title. I'm disappointed that this was not new material from Ms. Strutt and I feel a bit mislead by the publisher so I'm giving it 2-stars for those points only.

If you don't already have the original book in your own library, this "re-released" edition is worth more stars. The photos and material are beautifully presented and if you are already a Christina Strutt fan you will enjoy it. Unfortunately, I'll have to send my new copy back because as much as I love the content, I don't need two copies of the same book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vintage Charm Sept. 26 2011
By L. M. Keefer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
If you love romantic rural style, which I do, you should enjoy this book. With the demise of magazines such as COTTAGE LIVING and COUNTRY HOME, there's a dearth of outlets for this romantic, rural style. Author Christina Strutt believes this vintage style is here to stay with the emphasis on recycling, reusing and refurbishing vintage pieces. The confluence of the recession, care for the environment, and our nostalgia for simpler times and pleasures, is causing us to cherish the past and its simple beauty even more. Proof that this style is fashionable and in demand today, Strutt's CABBAGE & ROSES shops are flourishing: four new shops have opened and several new books of hers have been published in the past eight years. This is actually a reissue of a 2003 book she produced.

Chapters in this book cover the romance of vintage, vintage kitchens, living spaces, bedrooms, retreats & hideaways and creating vintage style. Elements detailed in the photos include Strutt's gorgeous faded floral fabrics, blue and white seaside ticking, painted furniture, chipped crockery, vintage books, skirted sinks, nature's accessories (lemons, eggs, garden flowers etc.) glass decanters, slipcovered chairs and ribboned pillows.

If you like this whimsical, fetching style, it's a lovely book for a side table. The charm of the cover is a beguiling hint of what you will find inside.

4.0 out of 5 stars Should Be Clearly Labeled as a Re-issue Oct. 11 2011
By Deborah Rose - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a beautiful book, but it should be clearly labeled as a re-issue of the author's 2003 book Decorating Vintage Style. I already have that book and did not realize when I ordered this that it is a re-issue. I went through the two books page by page, and they are the same. The only difference is that the new book is printed on much higher quality paper and is a conventional rectangular book shape, whereas the previous edition is a large square book with very thin paper pages. I will probably keep the new book because of the better quality production.

Apart from the above, I highly recommend Vintage Chic to those who, like me, love the very pretty, romantic, English style of decoration. Christina Strutt designs lovely, dreamy, pastel floral fabrics, and in this book she shows how they can be used in every room of the house and even in the garden.

2.0 out of 5 stars meh Nov. 10 2011
By dirtwitch - Published on Amazon.com
I loved Christina Strutt's sewing book Romantic Home Sewing, so I thought I would love her home decorating style book too. Stands to figure, etc.

Sad to say, I was underwhelmed. There just wasn't much spark to this book. A lot of the photos were blah, lacking in inspiration, and worse looked somehow dated. We like Christina's subtle color palette, but here it seemed a lack of creative daring. Instead of a decorating book I will pour over and study happily for months--which is what I did with Romantic Home Sewing--it's a flip through and a 'trip to the Goodwill' sort of reaction.

I'm am very thankful to the reviewers here who gave me the heads-up that this is a reprint.
