eye candy, May 17 2003
This review is from: Vintage Knits: 30 Exquisite Vintage-Inspired Patterns for Cardigans, Twin Sets, Crewnecks and More (Paperback)
I bought this book when it first came out and a year down the line i still haven't made anything out of it. It is beautiful to look at and well presented. The reseach on vintage knitting makes interesting reading. But the sweaters themselves are nothing special. For one they are all knitted with pricey Rowan and Jaeger yarns. I considered knitting the silk ribbed camisole but the yarn used costs over [$$] a ball! I searched for a similar gauge, got bored, put the book back in the bookcase and forgot about it. What makes you salivate at first is the fact that the designs are knitted up in pretty colours and worn by young atractive models in modern settings. Beyond the 'cuteness' factor, there's not much substance. I gave up buying 'eye candy' knitting books after this one. My advice to knitters in search of something trendy and challenging is: Invest in a good reference book with all the techniques (like Vogue ultimate knitting book)...keep an eye out for the more forward looking knitting magazines like Interweave knits or Vogue knitting which regularly will have 1 or 2 'must have' sweater have and look on the internet at the great knitting sites like knitty.com or Lana Grossa. You will save yourself both money and disappointment.

Excellent patterns for small women, May 7 2005
This review is from: Vintage Knits: 30 Exquisite Vintage-Inspired Patterns for Cardigans, Twin Sets, Crewnecks and More (Paperback)
I liked this book alot, because it's hard for me as a 5 foot, 100 lb. woman to find contemporary, stylish patterns that fit me well. In response to one of the earlier reviewers who claimed that this book doesn't allow for sizing of "real" women, I'd like to say that as a small woman, who most definitely is a real woman, ALL women have to expand their views on what women look like - small, big, 32AA or 34D. I resent being lumped into a category denigratingly described as "pre-pubescent". I am 27 years old - hardly pre-pubescent. And there are lots of small women out there, all over the world. I'm well aware of the fact that skinny models and teenage body sizes are being pumped to the masses as an ideal body shape. What women have to be just as aware of is that fact that just because a woman is small with a body type perhaps closer to the ideal, doesn't meant that she deserves to be denigrated. Women don't attain power by putting down other women. We have to learn that we have to accept each other, instead of succumbing to infighting that will prevent us actually changing the world for the better. I liked the patterns in this book alot, but not every pattern is meant to fit every body type, so if you're not petite, you may want to look elsewhere. But if you are, definitely pick it up!

The title does say vintage inspired...., May 6 2004
This review is from: Vintage Knits: 30 Exquisite Vintage-Inspired Patterns for Cardigans, Twin Sets, Crewnecks and More (Paperback)
I think this book is great. The designs are really pretty and you can easily alter measurements to fit larger chest, waist, and shoulder sizes, substitute colors for softer "vintage" looks, etc. However, I would agree the book may not please a vintage purist, but it is not advertised as being reproductions, but rather, "inspired". It's good if you like a vintage feel, but without the odd look that wearing actual vintage pieces can result in. This book is NOT for costumers, that's for sure! The designs to run young in presentation, but as mentioned can be easily done in different colorways to accomodate a more subtle expression.
