Book Description

April 12 2011
We’d all like a limitless budget for interior decoration, but few of us enjoy that luxury. We tend to fill our homes with a range of unrelated furnishings acquired over a number of years, and hope that somehow everything will work together. Tackling the tricky – and common – problem of combining furnishings of different styles and from various sources and periods, The Vintage/Modern Home demonstrates how to make the most of what you have in an achievable yet stylish way. Whether they are prized antiques, second-hand discoveries or high-street pieces, this indispensable book describes how to bring together old and new, inexpensive and precious with both subtlety and flair. Exploring examples of successful ‘vintage/modern’ looks in real homes, interiors expert Katherine Sorrell offers a wealth of creative solutions and practical tips, from using colour and texture to unify a scheme, to choosing the right accessories to make the maximum impact.

2.0 out of 5 stars Many better choices Dec 27 2011
By J. Ford - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
It is rare for me to browse a decorating book and not fine something that I just love. The title of this book grabbed my interest, but I was not expecting the intro to qualify the content as being geared towards frugality. Even so, I thought I'd find inspired designs for a not-so-upscale lifestyle. Instead, the book shows homes with features (views of central park, 20 foot ceilings, large stone fireplaces) few of us can afford, with advice that is same old same old. It does not take a genius to know that you can pick coordinated colors off of the same paint sample card, or that scale matters, and carpet can be the cheapest way to hide a bad floor.

Most of the ideas in this book published in 2011, can be found (with more inspiring examples) in older discount books dating back more than 5 -10 years ago. The rooms shown in this book aren't even decorated in such a way that I would aspire to achieve for my home. Of course, everyone has their own taste, but this book comes off as amateurish. Don't waste your money - even if you can afford the central park view.
