Book Description

Now, at last, the truth revealed… Master storyteller and humorist Stuart McLean takes us into the deepest recesses of the Vinyl Cafe to reveal the secret lives and hidden passions of the seemingly ordinary folk found there. The Vinyl Cafe Diaries answers these and other probing questions:

- What is Dave doing, by himself, in a Halifax hotel room, with a duck? - What purloined item has Sam surreptitiously stuffed under his mattress and why? - Why is Dave hollering and pounding on the door of the neighbour's house with a small boy clutched in his arms? - What grisly secret is Stephanie hiding in her father's picnic cooler? - Why is Kenny Wong laughing to himself as he reads the want ads? - Why in the name of decency is Morley parading around in Stephanie's clothes? - What are in the mysterious brown-paper packages that Sam is receiving by mail? - What cartoon character has been the object of Stephanie's unrequited love? - And why is Dave wearing that awful Grateful Dead T-shirt?

The Vinyl Cafe Diaries exposes the answers to these questions in never-before-told (well, okay, told on the radio) stories of strange secrets, odd dreams, high hopes, and, of course, hilarious misadventures.

5.0 out of 5 stars perfect for the eclectic reader-and just about everyone else, Dec 2 2005
This review is from: Vinyl Cafe Diaries (Hardcover)
If McLean were to write MY biography, I think that I'd rather that people go read IT than meet ME. McLean views even the seemingly ordinary with an extraordinary angle, making even the most regular-looking tales involving cigarettes, blizzards, and dorm life sound like the quirky adventures they truly are.

A repository of a certain Dave and Morley's family anecdotes (which, I promise you, would strangely remind you of your own), "Vinyl Cafe Diaries" is the kind of book that you'd expect to read once and put away...but, on second thought, would transfer onto your "favorites" shelf IN CASE you can revisit it someday. mainly to laugh again, of course.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read!, Jan 13 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Vinyl Café Diaries (Paperback)
This a collection of short stories about the very humourous trials and tribulations of a Dave, Morley and family and some of their escapades.

I laughed so hard I had tears running down my face. Surely this
author has met my family? Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saunter, don't sprint through this gem, April 4 2005
By Bruce in Toronto - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Vinyl Cafe Diaries (Hardcover)
When I first began to read Stuart McLean's Vinyl Cafe series a number of years ago, I was struck at the comfort of his writing style. Part of that comes from his training as an on-air story teller. He has a Sunday morning radio show on CBC where he tells his stories to a live audience in small venues as he travells around Canada. That experience with instant audience reaction has trained him in his writing style.

His stories remind me of a freshly turned garden. They smell natural, the people are of the earth. The stories are simple, but when planted, grow on you, like a flower, into something beautiful. Don't rush through the book. This is one best read one story at a time, with time in between to reflect on similar experiences you may have had during your lifetime.

4.0 out of 5 stars funny, cute, well worth it. a canadian lake wobegon, Jan 8 2006

i'm giving this book only 4 stars because i can't give it 4 3/4 stars, and though it isn't "OH MY GOD READ THIS" material, it is a great solid book, worth your time, with nothing i can say negetive about it. i would reccommend it to anyone who enjoys good stories told well. i saw this book in the airport and bought it. i know nothing of the vinyl cafe show (i do now, after reading on the internet about it) so it is all new to me.

the writing is flawless. quick, to the point, not pretentious, humorous. the stories are interesting and the perfect lenght. they don't drag on and they are not too brief.

i like the way the book is divided, four main chapters, one for each member of the family, and in each chapter four or so stories about that person.

again, the writing is direct and interesting, it flows. it is entertaining for anyone, regardless of your interests of sense of humor. a very good book.

I've read many of Stuart McLean's books, and listen to his show on NPR. I LOVE everything about them. There are surprising twists in his stories that catch my funny bone off-guard.
