5.0 out of 5 stars Just a story... Dec 7 2001
Format:Audio CD
This is not (only) a violin concerto, not (only) a virtuoso performance: This is a story, a love story told by Mutter's voice and Karajan conducting... Composers express themselves through their music: Mutter captured Tchaikovsky's love story. Tolstoy's images are coming in front of your eyes listening to this recording...

2.0 out of 5 stars Nope, not definitive. Jan 7 2004
By JPH
Format:Audio CD
Mutter obviously put her heart in this performance but her upper tones are often shrill, steely and piercing. I have heard her art to much better effect elsewhere. The total disaster of this cd is Karajan's accompaniment. His old-age tendency to indulge in slow tempi might work well for Wagner operas and R.Strauss, but it is entirely inappropriate here, in one of Tchaikovsky's liveliest scores ever. Karajan might have imagined that his luxuriant tempi would enhance the beauty of this work. However, given the distanced, low-resonance live-recording venue the overall orchestral effect is very dry and irritating. You are always left wishing he'd hurry up and get on with the music --- which he never does, because the contents of this CD are permanent!

2.0 out of 5 stars Unfortunate combo Dec 18 2002
Format:Audio CD
Anne-Sophie plays her violin with ultimate fury, the sound is forced and the interpretation forceful. Second movement is beautiful. Karajan is the worse accompanist conductor ever, the orchestra is all over the place. Tempi horribly slow.
If you want Anne-Sophie Mutter, get Beethoven Violin Sonatas, just heaven. If you want the concerto, Zukerman with Mehta, perfect in all senses. If Karajan, get Beethoven ninth and all the romantic and german repertoire. But Tchaik, Mutter and Karajan together didn't rock whatsoever. Bah!
