While it wont replace an actual instructor, it comes close.,

If you are interested in learning the violin and have no means of finding or learning from an instructor, than this is a must own book. Ignore the "Dummies" in the title and just understand that this book will take you through the history of the violin, the basics of holding and caring for your instrument, and into the realm of playing. The CD that comes with this book gives great clips of how each leason should sound and be played. I was impressed that it actually offers technique tips for playing in the styles of "Fiddle" and "Gypsie" as well. While this wont replace real formal training, it is a great guide to get you started on your musical path of discovery.

This is fantastic reference for violin students at any level. As a high school string teacher, I am very critical of materials for violin instruction. This book (and DVD) cover every topic with enthusiasm, careful details and humour. The Bow Hold Tips alone are worth the price of the book. If there is a young (or not so young) violinist in your life, buy them this book!

It's a very easy to read book. I have learned a few critical things from this book. I didn't know about the sound post until I read the book. In fact, I almost tossed it to a garbage can when I saw a piece of wood stick in the violin I bought. Comprehensive, yet designed for a novice. If you are familiar with music note reading, etc., there are sections that you can skip. Very good price too.
