Determined to fulfill his comrade's dying request and look after his cousin, Captain Richard Acton arrives in Cornwall just in time to save Helena Trethaerin from making an unwanted and disastrous marriage. However, to do so, he marries her himself-and promptly makes himself an unwitting target for murder. Despite the familiar "marriage of convenience" convention, the chemistry between Helena and Richard is right on target, keeping the reader thoroughly engaged. Some unusual historical detail, an occasionally confusing but generally likable plethora of secondary characters, and a dash of suspense involving a hero and heroine you care about make this a warm and lively holiday Regency novel. Readers of Ewing's novels (Scandal's Reward, Zebra, 1994) might also enjoy Gail Eastwood's The Persistent Earl (reviewed above). (Ewing lives in Montrose, Colorado.)
