This two-tape set, subtitled
A Spiritual Journey Back in Time, visits the natural spots made famous in the New Testament, the ruins of buildings instrumental in Jesus' life, and the churches built upon such spots. It is a wordless tour accompanied only by hymns and instrumental devotional music. The first tape spends its 55 minutes making a series of short stops at such places as the Mount of Olives, the ruins of Capernaum, the Jordan River with people lined up for baptism, and a church in Cana of Galilee, where the Bible says Jesus turned water into wine for a wedding. Noted onscreen are the place and city and, where applicable, referential Bible passages. Particularly effective is a 5-minute aerial view of the Judean desert, as stark as described in Jesus' day and home only to a few hardy animals and their shepherds and two improbable monasteries rising from barren cliffs. The second tape begins with a long segment detailing the celebration of Easter in Jerusalem, including a riveting pageant depicting a bloody, thorn-crowned Jesus being beaten by Roman soldiers as women surrounding him wail. This 53-minute installment ends with Christmas in Bethlehem, including the bizarre spectacle of a bagpipe band playing "Jingle Bells" while a Santa figure prances about, and the more traditional scenes of choirs singing and the celebration of midnight Mass.
