Product Description

Album Description

Visiter, the 2008 album by San Francisco band The Dodos, is their second full length and first for Frenchkiss. Originally formed in 2006 under the moniker Dodobird as a one man acoustic act, Meric Long would gig around SF playing folky guitar with a combination of loops and ambient keyboards. Having already studied West African Ewe drumming, Meric got turned onto Country Blues fingerpicking and sought to create a band where the drumming could be a center role and help bring out the syncopated rhythms coming out of the acoustic guitar. Through a chance introduction by a roommate, Meric met Santa Cruz transplant Logan Kroeber, who had also been experimenting with drumming, but in the area of Progressive Metal. Eventually the band changed their name to the Dodos.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Refreshing Take on the Ever Expanding Folk Genre., Mar 26 2008
By L. Haggett "Paperbag Writer" (Ontario, CAN) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As soon as the first sound waves of Visiter hit your ears you instantly know your in for something special. The opening track is a very good introduction of the expansive tonalities the Dodos will explore. "Walking" begins with a simple finger picking introduction set off beautifully by the calm voice of Meric Long. Mid way through the song you get a real taste of the album as a whole when Logan Kroeber burst out with his hypnotic drumming style. His drumming style is quite original, however, reminiscent in some ways of Animal Collective, but that is where the comparisons end. Dodos embrace their own sound of simple and memorable songs that do not stray deep into the experimental, freak folk or noise rock like Animal Collective. What small elements of these genres they do sample from they use as tonal accents to bring a special life to their songs, particularly nearing the climax of the song as a way to energize softer acoustic voicings.
Upon completion of your first listen of Visiter, the songs will be begging you to play them again. The hypnotic drumming will be pulling at you to listen again and again. It is an album you will not put down, a must have for 2008.
