5.0 out of 5 stars ... What you mean this rating scale only goes to 5?, April 23 2004

Far and away the greatest, most soleful, most inspirational, most flawlessly produced and blended album it has been my privilege to listen to. I have to break this down by song, it's too good to just say "everything is fantastic, go buy it":

1) Here: 7/10 Alright it's a little sad that the worst track on the album is the first, but hey, it's not that bad. A tad too loud and obnoxious for my taste, but everything else on this album is gold, trust me!
2) Touched: 20/10 Yes I know I'm rating on a scale of 10, but this is one of my favorite songs of all time, there is nothing that compares with the soaring vocals, punctuating guitars, beautiful stillness... it's about as perfect a song as you can make!!
3) Dirty Hole: 10/10 Mmm, this one I considered my "secret find", I didn't like it at first because it takes a while to build, and now that has become the reason I love it, just wait until the chorus kicks in and you'll be hooked ;)
4) Pretty When You Cry: 9/10 What a deliciously dirty little song, it's not perfect but it's very very catchy, made a nice follow-up single to Touched.
5) I'm Dying: 9/10 This song will pump you up, a very adreneline-powering song that really feels like it's in the perfect spot on the CD, especially when it transcends effortlessly into...
6) Flames: 10/10 The most beautiful song on the CD in terms of lyrics, soothing guitar, and breathy vocals. If you want to fall asleep, this is your song, just be careful of the next song...

7) Temptation: 10/10 Awake now? Yes the opening guitar on this immediately made me love it, and the rest of the song doesn't disappoint, it's another adreneline song with one of the best choir chorus's in the album.
8) Three Doors: 15/10 Another one I have to go off the rating scale for, yet another of my favorite songs of all time (2 off one album, that's a rare thing), you should see me rock out to this song when no one is looking... wait, that defeats the whole purpose.
9) The Niles Edge: 8/10 I like this song don't get me wrong, it's very gentle and sweet, but it just doesn't feel as soothing as Flames.
10) Somewhere Else To Be: 9/10 I have to admit I really didn't like this song for a while... until I finally paid attention to the end. The link between this song and the next song is the greatest I've seen on any CD, not only does it take you a while to tell when one has become the next track, but...
11) (Untitled): 10/10 HOW can you not title this track?? Oh man this is a great song, the male choir is enchanting, it literally casts a spell on me every time I hear it to this day, and it just sinks into you without any warning until you're utterly subdued. Don't drive and listen to this song at the same time ;)
12) You: 8/10 Not bad, not bad, a suitable way to end this masterful CD, and this is certainly one of the best constructed songs on it, but a little anti-climactic. Should have ended with (Untitled) in my opinion.

VAST's next few albums (Music For People, Turquoise/Crimson, Nude) are still great albums, but they can't hold a candle up to this one, although in my opinion Crimson comes very very close. It's a shame he never released Turqoise/Crimson to the mainstream, but if you're a diehard BUY THESE CD'S, they're only $5 for both if memory serves, it's a steal!
