I was eyeing the Vitamix for many months, if not a couple of years. Always wondered how much better a blender could actually be, compared to a cheap $30 Oster from Walmart. It just simply grinds food up, right? Yes you will get a "smoothie" through the Oster, but it's far from smooth even after a good 30-60 second blend which leaves air bubbles and sometimes foam after. And that's about the extent the Oster can be used.
Now the Vitamix is a flippin' power house. It turns fruit and ice to butter in about 5 seconds on high speed. Yes, 5 seconds to smooth perfection. This to me is ideal to minimize oxidization and retain more nutrients, as beating air into the ingredients simply degrades them. Be warned though, this power doesn't come without noise. This is an insanely loud blender, drowns out almost every other noise around. Kind of shocking the first time, when you realize just how much power this machine is actually pumping out.
The damper is genious

This appliance has become a staple in our household! We use it everyday, sometimes twice a day.

Many people complained about the noise. It is loud, but not significantly louder than my other appliances (Kitchen-Aid stand mixer, Cuisinart Food Processor).

Love my vitamix! I got my first one as a wedding gift. It did finally burn out (could have been repaired but cheaper to replace - frustrating). The first one lasted me about 16 years. I have since purchased two more, one for home and one for the cottage.

Admittedly we use it most often for smoothies (especially green smoothies), but also use it for batters (pancakes, waffles, muffins). I have made nut butters, soft serve ice cream and sorbet in it, have cooked soups in it. One of my favourite things to do with it is to make (and cook) cheese sauces, cream sauces, puddings, etc... in it because it is effortless (no more standing and stirring at a pot on the stove for me) and there is no risk of burning. To save a bit of time I often heat the milk or other liquid partway in the microwave.

We do have the dry canister as well which is best for batters. We have also used it to grind grains into flour (more often because I've run out of say rice flour, but I do have rice, so no need to run to the store).

I also have the smaller canister for mine, in addition to the larger one. Most of the time we use the small canister and definitely you will prefer the smaller one for smaller quantities of something, like making your own salad dressing or mayonnaise.

It is noisy to use, not an issue with a smoothie or whatever, but when cooking a sauce or pudding in it, it runs for several minutes. No worries, I will leave it running and sometimes leave and go do something else and just check back periodically and more often as I see it starting to thicken (you can tell both by the sound changing and by noticing the liquid is not splashing as far up the canister any longer).

I'm really pleased with this blender. I use it mostly for green drinks. Blends everything so smooth and quickly. Clean up is a breeze. Had a juicer in the past and I would never go back after having the Vitamix. Worth the price.

I cannot say enough about this. Before buying it, I saw quite a few demonstration videos but kept an air of scepticism. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how accurately they depicted this product! I love cooking, and this Blender has shed hours off of my time in the kitchen. I've used it AT LEAST once a day since i purchased it.

It is a steep price on Amazon though, and apparently you can get it cheaper at Costco, pay for it in instalments, or wait for a Groupon deal to surface (that's how my mom got hers, it was more than half off!). I really recommend it for soups, sauces, ICE CREAM (my love), green smoothies and juices, protein shakes, veggie shredding, I even chopped almonds with it in seconds for my salad. Can't say enough, as I mentioned before. LOVE IT!

We absolutely love Vitamix, we used our friend's older version for 9 months and used it for many different things. Before investing into this blender a couple weeks ago, I had read reviews about how it was leaving black Teflon specs in water after being blended. I decided to purchase it, and test it out. Sure enough, I blended a cup of water and it was full of black specs. Reviewers stated that Vitamix is aware of the issue and is developing a new container that will be released this fall 2015. I've also heard their customer service wasn't the greatest in helping those who had the black spec issue and said it wouldn't pose a health risk (sure, let's all eat Teflon after it's blended at a high speed and heated..research it..) If a person wasn't to blend water and inspect it, they would never be able to tell that there was Teflon being released into their food and ingesting it. We were highly disappointed that the Vitamix didn't workout!!!!
We've also purchased BlendTechs Wild Side blender twice, and after 2-3 weeks it started putting huge chunks of Teflon into our smoothies. Definitely wasn't going with that one again.
We purchased "Breville- The Boss" blender as a replacement, and there's been no black spec issue! Seems like it will be an excellent blender! Sorry Vitamix.
