This is a real gem of a recording! I'm thrilled to find an alternative to the Spinosi disc, which in my opinion, is quite unpleasant, due mostly to the ridiculously fast tempi of the arias, and the unnecessarily aggressive accents in the orchestra (even the splendid singing of Marie-Nicole Lemieux can't save it!). However, Kevin Mallon and his Aradia band approach the score with an assured sense of style and flare. The singers are all young, but obviously all on the verge of fantastic careers. Carla Huhtanen is splendid (especially her fioriture), and Marion Newman is a good Griselda, noble and sympathetic, with a warm timbre. Bass Giles Tomkins is a regal Gualtiero, impressively managing the difficult fioriture of his first aria. Tenor Colin Ainsworth makes the most of his role of Ottone, with lovely ringing high notes. Overall, a great addition to the Vivaldi opera library. Let's hope Naxos will continue to offer good alternatives to the Naive recordings.
