Product Description

Amazon.com essential recording

At the ripe old age of 19 Mozart wrote five violin concertos, and they represent his coming of age as a composer of orchestral music. From here on, it's basically one masterpiece after another. Though not difficult works, technically speaking, they partake in full measure of Mozart's uniquely sensual brand of melody. That means that successful performances must know how to spin out a singing musical line, while at the same time making the most of the rare opportunities for soloistic display. Taste and musicianship are more important qualities than virtuosity, and that makes these pieces ideal vehicles for Arthur Grumiaux's aristocratic temperament and technical polish. --David Hurwitz

5.0 out of 5 stars Elegant Mozart, Feb 29 2000

Arthur Grumiaux's aristocratic style really shines through here. He does not follow the more romantic style that seems to be very popular these days (check out Perlman and Mutter's recordings) and instead presents the music as it is intended to be. Some people may be turned off by this approach to the music, though, for it makes the music sound somewhat less impressive and perhaps slightly more dry. Nevertheless, Mozart's elegant melodies really sing via Grumiaux's treatment of the music. The Sinfonia Concertante is also appropriately performed. Arthur Grumiaux and Arrigo Pelliccia (viola) make a wonderful pair as they deliver the music with much precision and musicianship. This performance is one of the best that I have encountered. The sound quality here is first-rate, especially considering that this recording was made in the '60s. Only occasionally do you hear little scratches (especially prominent in the 2nd concerto). The supporting cast is also great; the LSO sounds as full and lively as ever, perhaps even a bit too "full" for a Mozart performance. At mid-price, this double CD is a must buy. There are competing disks on the market with similar or identical program, but this set is as strong a contender as any.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classicisme hautement maîtrisé, Jun 21 2011

This review is from: Vln Cto 1-5 (Audio CD)

2.0 out of 5 stars okay but..., Jan 30 2011

This review is from: Vln Cto 1-5 (Audio CD)
I bought this CD for 2 reasons:

1. I wanted Mozart's violin concerto's 1-5 in 1 place, with 1 interpretation from 1 group
2. The double CD had such rave reviews from Amazon.ca

I am disappointed with this disc for a couple of reasons:

1. The recording level on this re-release is far too high
2. The violins sound sharp. They seem to lack warmth.
3. The performance sounds too perfect & clinical, and seems a bit rushed and forced

There are better recordings out there, don't think this one is the best there is.

Regards,

M.
