Product Description

Knitters who want portable projects (and what knitter doesn’t?) know that hats and scarves make perfect on-the-go garments. That’s why they’ll grab this marvelous designer collection, with 24 stylish examples made with the most fashionable chunky yarns. Aside from offering a wide array of amazing textures, hues, and fibers that feel and look great, chunkys make knitting faster, because the thicker the wool and the bigger the needle, the quicker the results. Get going on the Garter Striped Scarf, knitted with dynamic red and orange furry yarns. The dual-function hat and long, attached, braided scarf is simply fun. Or try a funky Bell Pattern Scarf, a delicate lacy scarf in mohair, a jaunty Highland Striped Beret and Scarf, and many other designs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for the Beginner, Jan 23 2005
By Tempost - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Vogue Knitting on the Go! Chunky Scarves & Hats (Hardcover)
I got this book on the misguided notion that the chunky projects would be more beginner oriented. However, most projects require intermediate skill. There seems to be quite a lot of cabled hats and scarves here. The beginner level projects are things you can probably figure out on your own. There is one beginner level hat (on the cover) that looks interesting and I may make it soon. There are also these adorable baby hats (Ice Princess) with furry cuffs. I'd like to do something like that in adult sizes. The Water Lilies scarf is beautiful and is on my to-do list. The On the Fringe scarf may actually have some merit, but the color choices shown are soooo amazingly unfortunate, it's hard to get past the hideous-ness of it to see. All in all, I think the basics of a lot of these projects are in books you probably already own. But it's worth having if you can find a good sale price.

I was attracted to the hat and scarf on the cover. When I opened the book, I was even more impressed with the fun look of the items. Boy, am I sorry I bought this book! I don't know if all the patterns are as bad as the one I tried because I haven't looked closely. You name it -- this pattern has everything wrong with it. It says decrease instead of increase and knit instead of purl. It leaves out instructions. It is overly complicated and ill-conceived. I can't figure out how this book went to press.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprising Find, Nov 5 2008
By Jenn - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Vogue Knitting on the Go! Chunky Scarves & Hats (Hardcover)
I got this book heavily discounted thinking that if it had only one useful pattern inside it would still be worth it. What a pleasant surprise! I have so far made 4 of the patterns in the book and I am planning a few more. I own probably 15+ knitting books and most are much larger and prettier than this one but this has been my go-to book over and over. The patterns vary widely in complexity - some easy some quite difficult and I like that it has given me a new appreciation for bulky yarn as something that can be use for more than a whip up quick hat.
