2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing book from Vogue, Jan 11 2007

This review is from: Vogue Knitting on the Go! Knits for Pets (Hardcover)
I am a fan of Vogue knitting and have always found their patterns to be the most stylish and clear. "Knits for Pets" was a huge disappointment. Unlike most knitting patterns that indicate number of stitches for sizes sm, med and large, the majority of patterns in this book contain directions for only 1 size, mostly a size small. The author says " If your size is not given, you will have to do some math to adjust the numbers" (p. 10). I am a pretty advanced knitter and I have no idea how to do this. I've never had to learn because every pattern that I have used to make garments for either myself or for my dog (and I've made more than I can count)has indicated in parentheses how many stitches I needed for the size that I needed. I do not understand why the author did not provide info for other sizes especially since this info would hardly take up any extra space in the book. Every knitting pattern I've come across (from other Vogue patterns or elsewhere) gives you the stitches required for at least 3 sizes. I was very disappointed because I really wanted to make the icelandic sweater featured on the cover for my dog but the instructions are only for a size small and I need a larger size. So unless you know how to do the math to make size adjustments, I would not recommend this book. To be fair, it's possible that I may be the only advanced knitter out there who can't do the math to make size adjustments but even if that's so, I am irritated that the author did not put a little bit more effort into this book to make patterns easier for knitters to use. I am frankly surprised that this is a Vogue Knitting book. This being said, the patterns and toys in the book are cute (that's why I am giving this book 2 stars instead of 1). Fortunately, the toys do not require any size adjustments. Patterns include 1) hotdog dog toy, 2) dog bag carrier, 3) dog hat, 4) a fishbone motif cat mat, 5) a purse shaped like a dog, 6) a glamour collar, 7) cat and dog motif pillow covers, 8) dog booties, 9) a fair isle dog bed, 10) fish shaped catnip toys, 11) a dog bone motif first aid kit, and 12) felted mice catnip toys. There are 8 sweater/cape patterns.

2.0 out of 5 stars Teeny Pets & Children, Dec 5 2006

Teeny pets and Chidren would have been a better title for this little Vogue Knitting on the Go book. Patterns for dogs are sized for the wee set and include a knit satchel to carry little Pepe around when he gets tired of walking. There are patterns for kids who would like a hat that gives them dog ears, pillows with pet faces, a doggie chew toy (can you even imagine knitting for a chewing dog? there's a misguided effort!), a cat collar made out of eyelash yarn (just begging to be destroyed), and pillows with pet faces knit in intarsia. You can felt some fish for a catnip toy, knit your kitty a floor mat. Did the editor of this book even ever own a pet??? Personally I like my knitting to be admired not eaten, chewed, pawed, and otherwise destroyed!

1.0 out of 5 stars IMPRACTICAL, Feb 15 2007

I WAS REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING THIS BOOK, I HAVE LOVED ALL MY OTHER VOGUE BOOKS BUT THIS ONE DID NOT LIVE UP TO MY EXPECTATIONS. THE DESIGNS ARE SO IMPRACTICAL, THE FIRST TIME YOUR DOG MOVES MOST OF THESE OUTFITS WILL BE DRAGGING ON THE GROUND. AND THE TWO DESCENT SWEATER PATTERNS ARE FOR SMALL DOGS ONLY.
