Well-loved artist Mickie Mueller pays a powerful tribute to trees, written in a user-friendly style approachable by anyone. Those unfamiliar with Ogham -- the Celtic tree alphabet -- now have a wonderful opportunity to peek through this window into a forest rooted in the wisdom of Celtic lore. It provides a fascinating look at trees and all of the wisdom they emblematize. Ms. Mueller's writes that her artwork was created using traditional media, along with, "a bit of a botanical sample from the corresponding tree (bark, wood, leaf, blossom, etc.) in a magical infusion that was then mixed with my watercolor paints". I found the integration of the organics she speaks of to be particularly compelling and authentic. The cards supply both the Ogham association alongside the tree name and showcase powerful imagery that helps to inspire its intended divinatory purpose. Favorites include Aspen, Heather, Oak and Alder. All four images evoke an emotional quality that is indicative of this well thought out divinatory system. They have a narrative quality that take the viewer deep into the heart of the forest to a quiet place for inner reflection.
There is yet more to like about the Voice of the Trees oracle. The back of the cards has one of the most beautiful flip-side designs I've seen on a deck, oracle or otherwise. Atop a parchment style background, a lovely graphic showcases a symmetrical icon of 4 trees in the 4 seasons. The expansive companion book is beautifully conceived and includes images of the cards accompanied by divinatory meaning, symbolism and lore, and even a field guide containing relevant information about the tree.
I have but one complaint about this beautiful product: I wish there were more cards! The inclusion of 25 cards seems almost like a teaser -- a prelude of more to come. But at the same time, I would argue that Voice of the Trees supports a strong case for quality over quantity. What *IS* provided is a stunning package that feels good to hold, use and read over and over again.
