If it's sometimes a chore to get past Slipknot's stratified shock-rock shtick, Iowa's nouveau metal-mongers take the occasion of their third album proper to prove there's a genuinely restless, undeniable musical juggernaut beneath the horror-show masquerade. Producer Rick Rubin has honed their modern metal assault to a fine edge here, tempering it with a compelling sense of dynamics missing from all too many similar heavy forgings in the bargain. But credit the band with hammering together the solid foundations of what stands as their best album to date, a collection that succeeds by--surprise--reverting to more traditional song-forms and occasionally operating at something other than a relentless fevered pitch. Call it mainstreaming or a newfound maturity; whatever it is, it pays diverse dividends from the opening cinematic tension of "Prelude 3.0" and paramilitary-cadenced thrill ride "Three Nil" to the moody, rap-thrash single "Duality" and the unlikely, angst-laden pop hooks of "Circle." If that song's cello-inflected atmospherics and lilting Corey Taylor vocals may have the band's faithful initially rubbing their ears in puzzlement, by the time the evocative acoustic guitars, bittersweet harmonies and string quartet break of "Vermilion Pt. 2" rolls around, it's clear this is a band who's challenged itself with broad new horizons--and triumphed. --Jerry McCulley

When I first popped this one in, I was expecting another Iowa. Well, I couldn't be more wrong. It was more melodic, no swearing, not as much screaming and heavy guitars, and...guitar solos. I had no idea Slipknot could play such kick ass guitar solos. Why did they hide that? Anyway, it wasn't Iowa, but it was still great. Here's the lowdown:
Prelude 3.0...5/5...Eerie feeling to this one. But cool. This one's a little slower.
The Blister Exsists...5/5...Amazing song. The whole song makes up for that snare solo that drags on in the middle of the song.
Three Nil...5/5...Cool song that's constantly changing. Never gets boring.
Duality...4/5...A good song. Before getting the album, I'd've given it a 5/5, but it doesn't stand out with the rest of the album. So, I only give it a 4. Still good though.
Opium Of The People...5/5...Screaming, then singing. Cool guitars.
Circle...5/5...Acoustic. Singing throughout the whole song. This was the song that completely convinced me that Slipknot wasn't going to start swearing again on this album. Great song though.
Welcome...4/5...Good, but doesn't stand out.
Vermilion...5/5...I heard this on Much Music and saw that the aired version was crap. Don't judge it by what you hear on the radio, its different , and worse, than the real version on the album.
Pulse Of The Maggots...5/5...Awesome Guitar Solo. Probably hardest song on the album.
Before I Forget...5/5...Easily the best song on the album. Great verses, chorus, and bridge. It all flows perfectly.
Vermilion Pt. 2...5/5...Acoustic version of Vermilion. Different lyrics. Amazing.
The Nameless...5/5...Screaming, then a love song chorus, then more screaming, the love song chorus again, more screaming, and then the chorus with distprtion. Great song.

This was a surprise and I was shocked at how intelligent this album. It was very good.
Perlude 3.0 4/5 A great song... very chilling and creepy, yet very intelligent.
The Blister Exists 3/5 This song was a sort of disappointment, but it was fun to listen to.
Three Nil 3/5 Still not great, but not terrible either.
Duality 5/5 Here we go! A great song which was the first Slipknot song I ever heard. Album version rocks.
Opium to the People 4/5 Another cool song.
Circle 5/5 Best lyrics I've heard from a new band in years, not kidding. A slow song, but it fits into this album. Surprising such intelligent song writing came from a metal band.
Welcome 4 1/2 /5 Good, fast song. Great follow up to a slow song.
Vermilion 4/5 Good song, a bit too depressing, good song to listen to after a break up.
Pulse of the Maggots 5/5 Great mix of shouts from the crowd and a good tribute to fans.
Before I Forget 4 1/2 /5 Cool song, very good. Like it.
Vermilion Pt. 2 4/5 Basically an slower version of the first part to Vermilion, but I still like it.
The Nameless 5/5 A great song, some parts are quite depressing (i.e. Just love me.) but still a good song.
Virus of Life 3/5 I don't get this song.
Danger, Keep Away 5/5 Ending the album must've been hard, but a good song.
This is a great metal album, and it is very intelligent and well written, but kinda freaky and scary. I mean, after all, they recorded this album in a haunted house owned by Houdini!
Great!

Oh my God!! If you're a Slipknot fan, this CD is definitly something you people should buy!!!
I bought this CD a couple months ago and it's one of the best albums ever! Though, I gave only 4 stars because I wasn't too happy with the acoustic songs, I found them too slow for Slipknot.
My favourite songs on the album were definitly
- Duality
- The Opium of the People
- Vermillion
- Pulse of the Maggots
- The Nameless
(and it I'm in the mood for softer music)
- Danger, Keep Away
The lyrics in the songs were very well writen, "The Virus of Life" has fairly creepy lyrics like 'I can see you but you can't see me' and 'It's unbearable, it's almost worse for me
I'm gonna to tear you apart and make you see'. I loved the lyrics for "Vermillion Part 2" with lyrics like 'She is everything to me, The unrequited dream, A song that no one sings, The unattainable' which seem to have a lot of meaning. I especially loved the lyrics to "The Nameless" with parts like 'Obsession, take another look. Remember, every chance you took. Decide, either live with me, Or give up - any thought you had of being free'.
To top in all off, the songs were very awesome! Talk about 'ear candy', almost all of the songs on here are so creative, and the fact some of the songs can be a totally screaming competion and then turn into complete harmony and then switch to eerie whispers and rap which is actually good!
Personally, I think this album is one of the best ones I've heard though I would of gave the 5 stars if they didn't have the accoustic songs, I felt it was a major turn off. But, please, if you are a die-hard Slipknot fan, you should buy this!!

Words cannot explain this cd. This cd is so brilliant and talented and really shows what slipknot can do. Even people who do not like slipknot should fall in love with this cd. Ihate how people try and bash the knot by saying Mick and Jim can't play guitars haha yha right Mick and Jim are two of the best guitar players ive heard and O my god joey on drums is just so amazing and talented its just so crazy. Corey is my favorite singer he has such a unique voice that can send shivers down your spine because he is so f***ing good. this cd has brilliant songs and lyrics and really goes in a new direction for the band. I hope they will not break up because so many people love this band! they are the biggest name in metal right now and will go down in music history as one of the most talented bands ever! and how did they ever lose a grammy to machine head is that a joke because machine head blows its not even funny there a total joke its just cause slipknot is to hardcore for them anyways if your cool by this cd you maggot!
