Product Description

Product Description

Volume, a word that refers to sound, collections, and the measurement of space, is a crucial characteristic of both graphic design and popular music. While expressing different aspects of these two pervasive cultural mediums, the term also introduces a discussion on their many links. Volume: Writings on Graphic Design, Music, Art, and Culture is a collection of both new and classic writings by frequent Emigre contributor and educator Kenneth FitzGerald that survey the discipline of graphic design in context with the parallel creative fields of contemporary music and art. The topics of the writings are diverse: the roles of class in design, design education, Lester Bangs and Creem magazine, pornography, album cover art, independent record labels, anonymity and imaginary creative identities, and design as cultural chaos-maker.

About the Author

Kenneth FitzGerald is a writer, artist, educator, and curator. His writings on design have been published in Emigre, Eye, and Idea magazines; the books Graphic Design and Reading, and The Education of a Graphic Designer volume 2; and the online journals Voice: AIGA Journal of Graphic Design, Design Observer, and Speak Up. A self-taught designer, his independent magazine The News of the Whirled was cited for excellence by the American Center of Design and the AIGA.

Volume: Writings on Graphic Design, Music, Art & Culture is an outstanding selection focusing on volume - sound, collections, and space - in the arts. It provides both new and classic writings by educator Kenneth FitzGerald that survey graphic design's connections with other art mediums, offering a range of topics on everything from independent record labels to creating and marketing artistic identities, modern music's influence and relationship to fine arts and graphics, and more.
