Kids will find engrossing facts along with food for their imaginations in this 3-D introduction to the planets, the stars, the galaxies, and human exploration of space. Full-color pop-ups and gatefold illustrations on every spread show the Earth and its relation to the Sun and Moon, the solar system's planets revolving around the Sun, asteroids, comets, meteoroids, and other heavenly bodies. Even the dramatic front cover, which illustrates a NASA space shuttle, features a slide-open door to reveal details of the craft's interior. The book's two final illustrations show--

  • A rocket launch with a pull-tab that moves the rocket
  • The International Space Station, which pops up to present a 3-D effect

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introductory space book Sep 30 2008
By Daniel Stein - Published on Amazon.com
    Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this for my 2-year old about a month ago and it's still her favorite. The text of the book is more appropriate for ages 8 - 10, but every child should be transfixed by the illustrations, photographs, and of course the pop-ups. If your child is younger, be prepared to use the book as a discussion and interest generator, not as a text to read. The lunar lander pop-up doesn't expand fully, but that's the only derogatory comment I have. The book contains samples of several topics (e.g. the history of astronomy, a brief overview of the planets, star formation, etc.), but no in-depth information on any. Consistent with the recent IAU decision, this book only presents 8 planets and refers to Pluto as a dwarf planet. Overall, I find this a great introduction to and survey of the subject of astronomy, so as long as you're not looking for something comprehensive, you'll enjoy this book.

great book -informative, educational without the waffle, easy to use and methodical - why couldn't our teachers have been like this? recommended for anyone interested in space, goes well with a book on rockets!!
My 5 year loves it and recognises the stars and is inquisitive to learn more, he wants to be an astronaut as well as being a doctor, pilot...
