In this era of homogenized classical collections, it is great to see Testament rescue gems from the vaults of labels like EMI and reissue them on CD. This disc presents works by Wagner and Strauss as performed by the great Andre Cluytens and the Orchestre du Theatre National de l'Opera de Paris. While a companion CD with a remarkably similar cover (SBT 1256 -- see my review) is entirely in stereo, this title features all mono recordings from 1958. As the track information above is non-existent, allow me to say this disc features Wagner's "Siegfried Idyll," the "Forest Murmurs" excerpt from "Siegfried," and "Siegfried's Rhine Journey" and "Funeral March" from "Gotterdammerung." Also included are Strauss' "Don Juan" and the "Love Scene" from "Feuersnot." Despite Cluytens' reputation as a great interpreter of French music, he also left us with stunning performances of Beethoven and Wagner. His Strauss, while not approaching the same lofty heights, is very good as well. This disc is yet another "testament" to a great reissue program.
