I just received this CD in the mail. Greyson's covers of Paparazzi & Fire are not available anywhere else except buying this CD (no MP3's for these on iTunes or Amazon.com are available). I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this CD just for Greyson's INCREDIBLE vocals. Most music out there does not showcase the artist - but hides the artist's LACK of talent behind heavy digital instrumentation and uses Autotune to fix up their more difficult lyrics. But Paparazzi and his cover of Augustana's Fire on this CD have one obvious purpose - to show off Greyson's vocal talent. The producers just put a mic in front of Greyson and let his voice do all the work - and they deserve major kudos for taking that risk - to let Greyson succeed or fail based on his vocals alone. Their gamble will totally pay off - Greyson rises to the challenge - beyond what I could have imagined!
Both songs are slower than you might expect, and the background instrumentals are minimal - which put's Greyson's incredible voice front and center. If you have an 'ear' that likes to pay attention to all the technical nuances that a true artist can pack into a song - then you'll appreciate his performances recorded here. There is so much intelligence in his voice - it would be impossible to categorize all the different effects, slurs, falsetto's, crecendos, nuances, styles, phrasing, attitude, slides, playfulness, sneaking around then loud and serious - his creativity is so apparent here. I can't even imagine what muscles he must have been born with that can make these sounds. Yes, Lady Gaga, Josh Groban, and Jackie Evancho are extremely talented. Greyson is at their caliber of performance - when he is described as a prodigy, this CD proves it - in a unique way. Some people may not like it - if they want massive, room-filling sounds like from Celine Dion, Andre Bocelli or Carrie Underwood. But I've never heard another artist be able to pack so many different vocal colors in their phrasing - it's like he sings in 16 million colors, whereas most other artists maybe can paint with a 256 color palette. For my ears, Greyson is pure joy to listen to. His vocal acrobatics are so fun and intriguing. Plus he's got an amazing personality too. I'm so looking forward to his album to be released early next year!
