Product Description

Hazel Moran, the tough truck-driving amateur sleuth introduced in C. E. Grundler’s debut novel, Last Exit in New Jersey, returns in this dark and twisting sequel.

Seven years ago, someone destroyed Jake Stevenson’s dreams by murdering his fiancée, Helen Matthews, and her family. Since then, tracking down the one responsible—and making the person pay—has consumed his life. Stevenson thinks the truth behind the killer’s identity and motive might still lie in the most elusive place—buried within the mind of a semi-mad man. But Stevenson may have found the means to unlock Hammon’s suppressed memories, and cleverly he draws Hazel into his hunt. Can she trust Stevenson, or does he have a hidden agenda? Hazel has her suspicions—but she has her own reasons for playing along.

While there’s no question he’s insane, Hammon still has enough sense to question Stevenson’s motives, and his loyal companion, Annabel is even more concerned. To protect Hazel from becoming the next casualty of a forgotten history now repeating itself, they must retrace a treacherous path of deceit and murder. But Annabel thinks Hammon is going about everything entirely wrong, and she has decided it’s her turn to start calling the shots, whether Hammon likes it or not. And when, again, someone very close to Hazel dies, she’s pushed to the edge. The facts all point to suicide, but Hazel isn’t buying that. She’s determined to prove it was murder, and she’s closing in on answers, only to find someone is changing the questions. No one she trusts will hear her out; they’re all certain she’s in denial and becoming potentially unstable. But when has presenting a serious threat to herself and others ever stopped Hazel?

As her hunt travels from New Jersey to a Manhattan rave and a vacant construction site outside LaGuardia Airport, it’ll take all of Hazel’s tough, fearless, no-nonsense smarts to navigate a complex and dangerous trail of clues. How far will some people go to hide the truth? And how far will she go for vengeance?

About the Author

C. E. Grundler, a self-described “diesel-driving, double-clutching Jersey girl who spends too much time fixing boats and trucks, sailing, writing, and not behaving according to expectations,” has sailed the region’s waters single- handedly since childhood. Devouring her father’s old hard-boiled mysteries as a child planted the idea for a tough, resourceful woman, and Hazel Moran, the diminutive but deceptively hard-nosed heroine, made her debut in Grundler’s first novel, Last Exit in New Jersey. It was named one of the top three mysteries in the 2010 Red Adept Annual Indie Awards.

When not writing, she spends her free time aboard Annabel Lee, her thirty-two-foot Cheoy Lee trawler. She lives in northeast New Jersey with her husband, three dogs, and an assortment of cats. No Wake Zone is her second novel.

HASH(0x9d402ce4) out of 5 stars Thrilling May 27 2012

C. E. Grundler's No Wake Zone is an excellently paced thriller. The action builds slowly, but accelerates as the plot gets more involved. Hazel Moran is a splendid protagonist, a mix of Jersey Girl and James Bond who immediately engages one's sympathies. The whole cast of characters is beautifully drawn. There are small fry business types, Hazel's beloved with a delightful second personality, and a host of New Jersey shore types. As a fellow New Jerseyan, I am very taken with Grundler's use of particular Jersey locales that she seems to know to their very core, down to the lingerie department at Nordstrom's in the Garden State Plaza. My only hesitation in giving the novel five stars is that I felt that Grundler's prose, while always engaging, at times is stilted and even cliched. Nevertheless, I found myself hanging on from chapter to chapter as the book progressed. The tactic of alternating chapters between Hazel and her beloved works out solidly, providing two interesting and complementary narrative streams. I look forward to the next return of Hazel Moran.

HASH(0x9d40869c) out of 5 stars A worthy sequel May 22 2012

I've been waiting "No Wake Zone" to come out ever since reading the tantalising first chapter at the end of the previous book, "Last Exit in New Jersey". I think it is essential to read this series in order and I can easily understand the confusion of readers who have read this book in isolation. I read it in a single marathon session. The characters are just as fascinating this time around and there's a lot of fun to be had sorting out the goodies from the baddies. I hope the author intends to continue this series. I'm quite hooked.

HASH(0x9d408180) out of 5 stars Read #1 First! June 28 2012

When I ordered this book I missed the fact that it is #2 in a series. It appears that I'm not the only reviewer who made this mistake.

When I started reading "No Wake Zone," I was totally baffled....I felt like I was picking up a book and trying to read it from the middle - NOT from the beginning. The characters were well defined and the plot seemed to be fully established. Then I discovered that it is #2 in a SERIES of books. Boy did I feel stupid!

I am basing the number of stars for this review on the writing style of the author and the little bit of the plot that I understood (which, admittedly, was very little). After I read book #1 I will then try to read this book again and revise my review accordingly.

I chose to read this book because I had read the first book "Last Exit in New Jersey". I was excited to read it being that I am a Jersey Shore girl, born and bred in Jersey.
This book,"No Wake Zone" continued on in its fashion, being a very good read and having the same characters as the first book. It had me from the first page. Held my interest right away and continued thru the whole book.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a solid story with humor and excitement in all the right places.
Happy Reading,
Kathleen Tillotson
