Book Description

Nov 30 2006
When a puppy that could fit into a baseball cap entered bestselling author Marsha Boulton’s life almost a decade ago, she had no idea he was really a kid in a dog suit. Wally the Wonder Dog, a loopy-nosed Bull Terrier, whose face looks like a bicycle seat with eyes, became more of an experience than a dog from the moment he arrived at Lambs’ Quarters Farm. Written with the same acute observational eye and rousing humour as her Leacock-Award winning LETTERS FROM THE COUNTRY books, WALLY’S WORLD chronicles the havoc of a special relationship between a loose-lipped muscle on paws, and the shepherdly writer he commands.

Review

Wally’s World is a gem. This story about a singular bull terrier that ruled the roost in a couples’ lives and hearts for a few short years is just like the breed the memoir so lovingly and poignantly portrays---funny, unexpected, and heartbreaking in the best ways.” ---Jonathan Carroll, author of the New York Times Notable Book of the Year The Wooden Sea, The Land of Laughs, and The Ghost in Love

“It is a rare treat to step into a total world revolving around a dog we’ve all dreamed about. Wally is a canine Clark Gable, a charming rogue, loved without reservation. More than that, here too is the writer’s life, with more twists and turns than a dangerous mountain road or a smooth interstate. Wally’s World took my breath away. You gotta love him and his family.” ---Mordecai Siegal, author of Dog Spelled Backwards

"An entertaining and touching story of an inimitable dog whose winning personality and joie de vivre touched all who knew him. Whether during idyllic and hilarious times as a farm dog or helping his people navigate a Kafkaesque legal case, Wally was ever ready to inspire, comfort and bring joy to those he loved." —Claudia Kawczynska, Editor in Chief of The Bark Magazine

"Wally, who is the centre of Boulton's and Williams' worlds, provides comic relief through the book as he does in real life. He's good natured, charming and loaded with personality. He'll do anything for a cookie or a ball." – Joanne Shuttleworth, Guelph Mercury

"Wally is more like the thread that holds the book together -- just as he has helped to hold the author together during difficult times." – Kitchener-Waterloo Record

"If you like pets, you will love Wally's World. "Wally uses his bully front paws as adeptly as Oscar Peterson uses his hands on the piano . . . he jumps in the air to make a header and has bounced tennis balls off his nose since he was a puppy." – Andrew Armitage, Owen Sound Sun Times

"Wally's World is a gripping memoir that moves gracefully between humorous stories about Wally, the beloved dog cum child, and Boulton's narrative of Williams's tribulations, told with icy irony and barely restrained anger - 'not all that much has changed since Salem.'" – Elizabeth Abbott, Globe and Mail

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Bully owner should get this... Nov 3 2007
Format:Paperback
For anyone who has a Bully, Wally's tales should simply make you smile. Only a Bull Terrier owner can think of his antics and picture their own Bully doing the same thing, with that mischevious perceived grin on their face.

For anyone who doesn't know anything about Bull Terriers, this should serve as a guide to some of the weird quirks of the breed.

Above all, it is another fine book by Marsha with entertaining tales told in her humourous style. It also gives us a peek into how our four-legged friends can help us deal with some of the harder times in life, as the book also chronicles Stephen Williams' legal woes at that time and how Wally at least brought some extra love and humour into the situation.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and would strongly recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely story Feb 12 2008
Format:Paperback
I curled up on a cold winter day, with some hot tea, and a comforter and a book I hated to put down. Some things in life are truly wonderful and Wally's World is a true joy. I have ordered more of Marsha's books to be on the ready for such another rare opportunity. Would be a good cottage read, or a bedtime story...a light, enjoyable treasure of a read, that I will share with all my dog loving country friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just terrific!!! April 24 2007
Format:Paperback
I picked this book up in my local library, hadn't read any of Marsha Boulton's previous works. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed and was impressed by this effort. It is heartfelt, and emotional, and I want to read other books by her now. I haven't sat and read a book in a day in a long time, but this was worth the effort. Just terrific!
