Book Description

May 25 2009

For thousands of young British girls, the influx of Canadian soldiers conscripted to Britain during the Second World War meant throngs of handsome young men. The result was over 48,000 marriages to Canadian soldiers alone, and a mass emigration of British women to North America and around the world in the 1940's.

For many brides, the decision to leave their family and home to move to a country thousands of miles away with a man they hardly knew brought forth ensuing happiness. For others, the outcome was much different, and the darker side of the story reveals the infidelity, domestic violence, poverty, alcoholism and divorce that many lived through.

War Brides draws on original archival documents, personal correspondence, and key first hand accounts to tell the amazing story of the War Brides in their own words-and shows the love, passion, tragedy and spirit of adventure of thousand of British women.

I have read this book twice. I am in awe of the ladies that left their home and country to live with someone they don't really know.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read Nov 12 2007
Format:Hardcover
I recently read Melynda Jarratt's War Brides and was greatly impressed. Jarratt has put together a collection of stories that not only paints a picture of the lives and loves of the Canadian war brides, but that also takes the reader on a journey across post-war Canada from the rugged shores and timberlands of New Brunswick, to the metropolis of Toronto and on to the gentile English-like city of Victoria. These women braved a new land and sometimes frontier conditions to be with the men they loved. They farmed, fished, ran businesses and raised their families thousands of miles from their homeland of England. Jarratt is a master historian and storyteller herself and has brought together in one collection the stories of this extraordinary group of women. I recommend this book to anyone who knows of the Canadian war brides or who wants to get to know them and learn more about the challenges, successes and even failures they encountered in Canada.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good overview of the Canadian War Bride experience Aug 23 2009
By Maude - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I think this books provides a very good overview of the Canadian War Bride experience. In addition to telling the romantic and dramatic - sometimes happy and sometimes sad - stories of the war brides and their children and families, it outlines well how the geographic and linguistic areas in which each war bride settled influenced the individual's experience. I enjoyed reading about how the women came to the decisions to change their lives so radically and how their lives turned out - sometimes better, sometimes worse than they expected but I think always different. It is a book about women who had - or had to have - a lot of courage, and I found it inspiring. I also found it interesting to read about the women whose mothers joined them from the UK. Even though I have read a lot of war bride books, I don't think I have read about that before. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in war brides and the experience of moving to another country and/or marrying someone from another country/culture. The book provides both an overview and personal experiences. It tells many touching stories, and they are told by a writer who I feel cares about the women.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fine reading Dec 17 2012

War Brides by Melynda Jarratt has been well-received and appreciated by war brides (women who married Canadian servicemen during WWll), and by their families and friends. Readers unfamiliar with this exceptional group of thousands of women with their individual backgrounds, personalities, and experiences will discover that they have made a colorful and significant contibution to the fabric of Canada. It was a pleasure and a privilege to first come to know some of them during 2005, the Year of the War Bride. The stories and photos that Ms. Jarrett includes make this book fine reading.
