Pitting Hong Kong legend Jet Li against UK tough guy Jason Statham seems like a surefire way to generate on-screen heat, and action fans will get a good deal of just that from the action-heavy War. Unfortunately, they also have to slog through a clichéd-riddled story about world-weary FBI agent Statham, who's gunning for Li, the master assassin that killed his partner years before, and who's currently neck-deep in a turf war between yakuza and triad gangs. Philip G. Atwell's style-over-substance direction doesn't help matters either, though he does have a way with shootouts and other combative set pieces. As for Li and Statham, their scenes together are surprisingly limited; there's also a twist in the film's final third that begs for serious suspension of disbelief. In short, those that found the duo's last movie team-up (2001's The One) lacking won't find much here to supplant that memory. The DVD includes three commentary tracks: one by Atwell, one by screenwriters Lee Anthony Smith and Gregory J. Bradley (it's the liveliest of the lot) and an audio trivia track that delves deep into the film's production, which is also covered in detail by nine separate featurettes. A gag reel and deleted/extended scenes round out the supplemental features. -- Paul Gaita

Shiro,Sung Kang as Goi,Mathew St. Patrick as Wick, among others. This is a straight up violent melee' with a twist ending.Although the plot is a been-there,done-that scenario, director Ellis handles his chores with a deft touch, along with the nice editing and a driving musical score.
The story finds us in San Fran. There are two crime bosses, one Yakuza,Shiro, who has never stepped foot on U.S.soil but has underlings working there for him and controlling his interests. The second group is a Chinese Triad gang run by Chang. The Yakuza has slowly been encroaching upon his turf for years, which has dried up his liquid assets.Shiro is shipping a couple of priceless gold statues to the U.S.to sell on the black market and Chang intends to get them for himself. The money he obtains from their sale will more than put he and his empire on a better footing.
Entering this picture comes Crawford and Tom Lone,as two FBI partners. They take part in a bust of a Yakuza operation and a special hit man called the Rogue is shot in the incident. The Yakuza want revenge so they let the Rogue loose who "kills" Lone, his wife and child and sets the house on fire.Crawford is beside himself with grief, but revenge soon enters his heart. In the meantime we are privy to the Rogues disposition. That being he likes to think of himself as masterless, accountable to no one. With that mind set he has a penchant for working for one side while playing the other against itself.Read more ›
1. Shoot out
7. Double Cross
9. Hand to hand combat
There - that just about covers everything you need to know before watching this movie.
Essentially, it's a martial arts-based action film about a carefully engineered war between Triad and Yazuka gangs, with Jason Statham as Jack Crawford, an FBI task force leader, and Jet Li as Rogue, reportedly an ex-CIA assassin gone wild.
When Crawford's partner and his partner's family are murdered, Crawford commits himself to avenging their deaths, to the detriment of his own family life.
Not exactly all that it could have been, the plot isn't very good, and the ending is worse, but at least you can't fault it for providing non-stop action and thrills. Recommended for Statham and Li fans, and people who'd love to own a cool car like the Spyker C8 Spider.
Rated: 3.5 for entertainment (albeit mindless)
