Deborah Newton's stitch patterns in this book are all extremely appealing to me. Some of her color choices and designs are not my taste, but I still find this book very exciting as the ideas are unusual. Designs include shrugs, sweater set, tops, vest, sleeved/sleeveless dresses, a catch all purse, man's vest. I haven't tried using the book to knit, but it looks very comprehensive. You might like to read her other books first, as she really does make a case for a more measured approach to knitting--she is right, you can tell by the finished look of her work. IMHO!

This is a knitting pattern book that is rare in my extensive collection. Instead of two or three patterns I want to make, there are at least six. They are all doable for the beginning and intermediate knitter, and generally flattering on differnt types of figures.

Lovely Lacy Fitted Garments,
By DFE - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Warm Weather Knits (Paperback)
I don't generally care for Newton's designs because she tends to favor oversized sweaters which are just not my thing. The patterns in this book on the other hand are right up my alley. They are for the most part fitted lacy sweaters. The picture on the cover is typical of the projects in the book. Most feature several different kinds of lace with a bit of cable thrown in. The patterns mostly call for cotton or cotton blends. If you like to use the exact yarn called for in the project, you will be happy to know that she uses widely available mid-priced yarns. The patterns mostly call for smooth cottons and blends primairly in dc and worsted weights that lend themselves to easy substitutions. All of the patterns are for adult women, plus one child and one male pattern. I can honestly say that I like every single pattern in the book and several of them are on must make soon list. The book is not perfect though. There are in my opinion way to many cardigans - there are several twin sets - and not enough pullovers. It should also be noted that most of the garments are too open to be worn without something underneath. I also wish that she had offered more sizes. She only provides the standard XS-XL ranges (some patterns are only S-M_L). On top of the all of the sizes are in 4" increments which is way to large a gap for fitted garments made with plant materials that offers little give. My biggest disappointment though is that there are no charts, everything in written out long. Since many of the patterns require working several different panels of varying repeat lengths simultaneously, the lack of charts is a seriouse oversite. 2 of 3 people found the following review helpful
