As I acquire more and more of Warren's music output I'm continually blown away with his greatness. There are simply only a few people in the music industry that can hold a candle to this man's ability and diversity in music. He's a master at creating his own music, doing covers that are tasteful, creative and at the same time respectful of the original. It always amazes me the different music genres he seems to plug into together that seem to fit in so well. This is also true of his Mt Jam weekend at Hunter mt., New York where you always walk away with the feeling that the diverse set of bands seem to have a common thread.
This new collection of 2 CDs fit perfectly into this mindset. Starting out with a beautiful acoustic Warren playing Carolina in my mind, then into a couple of Bluegrass numbers with and without Warren by local talent Sons of Ralph, then into some killer Blues with Robert Randolf and the Family Band. Closing out the first CD is Moe at it's fine form with 2 spacy Jam tunes.
CD 2 begins with a powerful 3 songs from John Hiatt that is powerful and much more aligned with a Jam mentality than his studio stuff that sometimes leans toward country rock. Bob Wier's 3 tunes are well down with the highlight being a very different Shakedown Street with an extented Jam in the middle that was dynamic. Warren and the Mule cap of the entire collection with 3 tasteful extended versions of 2 Mule classics and finishing with the Mule's cover of Skynerd's Simple Man.
If you are fan of great musicianship, great jams and top quality recording of this type of music, you can't go wrong here. I've already ordered volumes 2 and 3 after getting this collection and will review them after enough listens.

what a surprise i got listening to this cd. being a dead fan, i bought this for the weir tunes. i also am a big warren fan so i knew what i was getting there.but when i put the first disc in i was blown away right on the first track, warren playes carolina in my mind with don lewis and it is just great. followed up by sons of ralph which just cooks !!!! if you like carolina style music you are gonna love this. i love that warren is so cool about the local music scene he brings in these guys who people know in the area but are such a nice surprise to the rest of the country. the jerry joseph tunes are good, lots of passion. great widespread panic cover song he has done in the past with w.p. i like it alot...then moe comes on and does a super, dark star ,,,,,,warren pitches in also......just a great disk......disk 2 john hiatt is as i have seen live ,,,what you expect from him.the bob weir stuff is ok ... the rest of the disk is what you would expect............i really like simple man as a closer with skynyrd drummer artymus pyle sitting in...but if your like me you will be listening to the first disc ALOT ..
