Book Description

In 1905 Edwin Arnold created a character that many feel changed the course of Science Fiction and that character's name was Lt. Gullivar Jones. Though its reception was lukewarm at the time of its publication, Arnold's tale of Gullivar's journey to mars and falling in love with a Martian princess is thought by many to have inspired the Martian tales of Edgar Rice Burroughs, written some six years later. Dynamite Entertainment is proud to bring these characters together, telling the story of their first meeting! The time is post Civil War America. Lt. Gullivar Jones, a distinguished Navy officer, is tired of not receiving the promotion he feels he deserves and desperately needs to be able to marry his fiance. While sulking through the streets of New York, Gullivar encounters an aged man and a strange carpet that appears to have originated in the far east. Little does he know that this carpet will become the vehicle that will transport him not only through space but time as well, as he is hurtled into the past, present, and future of John Carter's Barsoom. In the past, Gullivar meets the beautiful Princess Heru, a mysterious Red Woman whose secrets lead him directly to Barsoom's present, where he forges an uneasy alliance with the Warlord of Mars John Carter and his beloved wife Dejah Thoris, all before hurtling into the future where Barsoom faces a threat unlike any it has known before!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great homage to both of the classic characters! Mar 4 2013
By Mr. G. Caci - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
As a fan of both 'John Carter of Mars' and 'Lieutenant Gullivar Jones: His Vacation' I was really looking forward to reading this, and it surpassed my expectations. The two characters had been depicted together before briefly in 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol. 2' by Alan Moore, but this of course is a full story devoted to the concept. The first part of the graphic novel is quite a faithful albeit somewhat condensed adaptation of Edwin Lester Arnold's original Gullivar Jones book, with a few clever tweaks like making the Mars he visits Barsoom in the past etc to make the idea plausible that he can later meet John Carter in the second part of the book set in Barsoom's present, and the final part is set in it's future a thousand years after the time of John Carter. Both main characters are well done, and neither gets short shifted as can often happen in these types of crossover tales, and the artwork is really well done too, so all in all, I thought it was excellent and highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of either of these two great characters.
