OUT NOW: BOOK FIVE, THE CHRYSANTHEMUM SEAL!

"This manuscript is full of highly crafted detail that will make readers shiver at times with fear and delight ... a familiar yet highly original fantasy that is a worthwhile read."

-- Publishers Weekly

Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award 2012 semi-finalist.
An ancient empire stands on the brink of a civil war.

Their quest may push it over the edge.

It is the Seventeenth Year of Queen Victoria's enlightened rule. The Qin Rebellion spreads dangerously close to the old capital and only the remainder of the Second Regiment of Royal Marines stands between the rebel army and the vital trade port of Huating.

In Yamato, after a mysterious ritual fusing Bran's soul with that of an ancient warrior, he, the wizardess Sato and the shrine apprentice Nagomi flee Kiyo, pursued by the Yamato authorities - and by the associates of a shadowy figure in Crimson Robe. Their quest - to find Bran's captured dragon and discover the whereabouts of Sato's abducted father.

A detailed and fast-paced historical fantasy based around the turbulent opening of Japan to the West in the middle of the 19th century, "The Warrior's Soul" is the second volume in "The Year of the Dragon" saga. The third volume, "The Islands in the Mist", is expected in Autumn 2012.

4.0 out of 5 stars unique twist on history Oct. 6 2012
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com

Enjoyed the re-do of history with dragons. Loved that Mr Calbraith paid attention to the cultural identity of each of the characters. Very solid characters also, I had no issue believing the confusion, & motivations of the teens as well as the adults as they deal with each new situation. Can't wait to get the rest of the story...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great alternate history with fantasy thrown in Oct. 20 2012
By Vered Ehsani - Published on Amazon.com

Bran, Sato and Nagomi are back in this unusual story that blends historical fiction, set in imperial Japan, with fantasy, dragons and a touch of magic. The Warrior's Soul picks up where The Shadow of Black Wings leaves off. Bran is in mortal danger and disguised as a Samurai, he flees with Sato and Nagomi in search of his lost dragon. Evil however is close behind and at ever turn. James Calbraith does a wonderful job at weaving fact and fantasy into an alternative but very realistic history that pulls the reader into a rich tapestry of landscape, intrigue and history. While the story focuses on Bran and his friends, there are a few sub-plots with numerous characters, and that can get a bit confusing (especially since the names are almost all Japanese sounding). That said, I would still recommend this series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good storyline but . . . Oct. 6 2012

This book has a good storyline and it flows fairly well. The only problem is that this book along with all of the others in this series is relatively short. The first two books could easily have been one book

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing April 11 2013
By Anne Brunsgaard - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
After reading the first book in this series I was intrigued. The author created an interesting world where many ancient peoples had never been conquered/overrun and so maintained their cultures. The main characters were not so interesting but I had hopes things would improve in the next two books. Things started to speed up but multiple shifting between POVs made it difficult to keep track of the story and too many characters were introduced to easily keep track of. There also seemed to be a need for an editor, since there were many instances of the completely wrong word (that sounded a little like the right word) being used, and strange descriptions, especially of inanimate objects. Overuse of titles for the characters (like "the wizardess" and "the priestess") were distractingly annoying and it would have been much better simply to use the character's name. Action sequences were difficult to follow and, with POV switching, so was the story at times.

I think this author definitely has potential but just needs some polishing. The ideas, such as the way magic and dragons are commonly used in the world, were interesting and very creative, but style of writing and clearness of the story needed improvement.

3.0 out of 5 stars a multiple book series Dec 30 2012

Beware, this is a book in may be a never ending series, and I do not see how the author can take a rather weak (in my opinion) premise and continue to milk it.
