Product Description

Product Description

Fran Varady fell into private detective work by accident rather than design. Now she's got a 'real' job at a trendy pizzeria, she's back on track with her acting ambitions, and she's even found a nice flat to rent. But things aren't as straightforward as they seem. The job, for a start: there's something rather sinister about the way the pizzeria is run. And the play rehearsals aren't going well. As if all this doesn't bring problems enough, Fran has rashly undertaken to help a young boy, illegally in the country, find an elusive people-trafficker called Max. When the trail Fran is following is suddenly and tragically interrupted by a horrifying death, she finds herself up against dangerous men and a ruthless organisation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Character Driven, Jan 3 2006
By "jon_salsberg" (montreal, Quebec Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Watching Out (Paperback)
This was my first foray into Ann Granger Land. Although I wasn't overly enthralled with the plot, nor the mystery for that reason, I was really taken with the characters, especially the heroin, Fran Varaday. As the jacket blurb says, "...engaging!" They drove the story. I also enjoyed the depictions of the seedier aspects of north-central London. Usually literary depictions of Camden Town or the Islington and Canal areas are a bit more artsy or up-scale than this. It was refreshing to get a grunge-noire depiction that was neither east end working class or north London dullness. Very enjoyable and a quick read.
