Jim and Anne Shaw have two daughters, and two sons. They live in Preston's poorest area. Jim's mother, Ma Shaw as they call her, is the dominate one of the family. They are a close family always looking out for one another. Jim works as a night watchman on the Albert Edward Docks. One night when Jim is making his rounds he comes across the body of young Missie Shepherd, a young prostitute who sells her trade to the sailors that enter the Albert Edward Docks. Missie's throat has been slit from ear to ear. Jim doesn't know what to do because he has once again been drinking on the job. If Jim reports this to his to his superiors, and they find out that he has been drinking, he will be fired, and Jim's family needs his wage. Meanwhile Jim's beautiful daughter Kate, catches the eye of the rent collectors handsome young Son, Andrew. Everything is good with Kate and Andrew until Robin Wells comes in to the picture. Robin Wells is an evil man and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. This is such a good book, and it will hold your attention from the first page right to the last page. There is so much going on, but Alexandra's wonderful writing keeps you from being confused. This is truly one of the best books I have ever read! Well done Alexandra Connor!!!!!
