If you've got strict limits on size or budget, the chapter on container gardening will supply all your answers. The authors begin with chapters on planning and designing and on excavation and installation. Advice on pond chemistry (chlorine and chloramine, oxygen and carbon dioxide) follows, as do instructions on planting the garden. There's a list of commonly available water lilies and aquatic plants and detailed directions on selecting and caring for fish. Other chapters focus on dealing with pumps and filters and on solving problems created by algae, aquatic insects, predators, and falling leaves. I always wanted a small water pond or pool for Koi and water plants. I thought it would be difficult to do myself. Who understands the chemical properties of water...is there enough oxygen or too much nitrogen? Helen Nash has put together a perfect guide in Water Gardening Basics! Whether it's a small or even a large system, this provides the basic understanding about the degree of difficulty involved. And with photos to illustrate suggestions, it is exactly what I needed to make my small pond with a miniature waterfall beneath the weigalia and cypress papyrus.
