This is a nicely laid out keepsake book of a select 55 waterfalls illustrated with Guitard's photography. Handily categorizing the selection by provincial scenic drive and county, the author reminds us that no matter where we live in New Brunswick, one of our own local waterfalls is within reach.
'When we explore these significant areas we encounter nature on its own terms; we make a journey of discovery into our ancient past, not to mention recent history, and are given a connection to the future,' Guitard writes. His words encourage us to take ownership of these treasures and thus, the responsibility of protecting their integrity.
Thankfully, the author resists the urge to wax poetic on the beauty of the falls; instead using trim, yet graceful prose to provide brief geological and natural history on each. Some include a snippet of human history, such as Robinson Falls in Victoria County, which is known locally as Maggie's for the woman who used to charge children five cents to swim in the water.
There was enough information to pique my interest in donning my hiking boots for some earnest exploration, but in some cases, I suspect not enough to actually take me there if I was not intimately familiar with the area. The maps and directions are very general - if you want more detailed directions, Guitard has also published a companion field guide which provides GPS coordinates and more.

Not big on how to get there

I purchased this book because on my next trip I'll be traveling through a part of New Brunswick I haven't previously traversed and wanted to visit a waterfall or two along the way. Although the author lists waterfalls for all access levels, the book is short on driving directions. It would be helpful if he had included such information (which is available on his Web site) in the book. The way things are now, I'll have to print the driving directions off the Web site and insert them into the book -- not very convenient. I see that a new edition is supposed to be published in spring 2010. I wonder if it will include the driving directions.
