During his junior year at the University of California, Dan Millman first stumbled upon his mentor (nicknamed Socrates) at an all-night gas station. At the time, Millman hoped to become a world-champion gymnast. "To survive the lessons ahead, you're going to need far more energy than ever before," Socrates warned him that night. "You must cleanse your body of tension, free your mind of stagnant knowledge, and open your heart to the energy of true emotion." From there, the unpredictable Socrates proceeded to teach Millman the "way of the peaceful warrior." At first Socrates shattered every preconceived notion that Millman had about academics, athletics, and achievement. But eventually Millman stopped resisting the lessons, and began to try on a whole new ideology--one that valued being conscious over being smart, and strength in spirit over strength in body. Although the character of the cigarette-smoking Socrates seems like a fictional, modern-day Merlin, Millman asserts that he is based on an actual person. I read this book when I was about 13 years old. It was one of the first books I read and it had such a tremendous impact on my life I called Dan Millman. I looked up his name in the phone book and called him at home. I can't believe I did this. Dan if you are out there, and remember this - please get it touch with me. All I remember is that the back of the book gave his hometown. From there I was able to get his home phone number. I remember calling him late at night, well late for me as a 7th grader anyway. I just told him that I really liked his book. That was about it. It seems like a magical dream. However, when I look back on it now, I must say I have always known that I am capable of being a peaceful Warrior. I think this book is what implanted that into my brain for so many years. Thank you Dan!

This is the first book I ever read about what I call "Conscious Living." It talks about the benefits of present-moment awareness, explains the real source of happiness, and, in general, demonstrates the way to live a more peaceful and fulfilling life. Although I have read many books on this subject since (I even wrote one myself), I will always be grateful to Dan Millman for leading the way with his inspiring story of one man's search for truth and meaning. Even if you don't read this book, then go see the movie! It does an excellent job of capturing the high points of Dan's story, and presents Dan's message in a deeply moving way.

I found this book truly inspiring. Although some might say that it is a bit gender biased, I would say it captures the male persona in a most interesting fashion. It is the story of a young man (much like many of us) who met the person, who ultimately become his spiritual guide, in a most unlikely place. The lessons taught do the sixties good as they are congruent with much of what we saw as important back then. I think it is a must read for two reasons. It is a reminder for people over 40 that we do have a responsibility to teach young people and a personal wakeup call for those younger that if you wish to learn the secrets of their soul, it is all around if you can but perceive.
