Product Description

The anonymity of a phone line is the secret to success for Darrell Bricker and John Wright of Ipsos Reid, the largest market research company in Canada. Ipsos' accuracy in gathering people's thoughts and predicting trends makes the company the go-to source for almost everyone seeking answers to strange but intriguing questions such as: What would your ideal lover look like? What would you never bring on a romantic holiday? Would you rather touch the Stanley Cup or Dorothy's ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz? Does attending university make people less religious? And, if the phone rings at dinner, who is the last person you want it to be? (Hint: it's not a pollster!)

In We Know What You're Thinking, Bricker and Wright, the bestselling authors of What Canadians Think About Almost Everything, let us in on the insights they've gleaned from thousands of polls and the unlikeliest of characters they've encountered-- including the retiree who still believes in Santa Claus, the childless person who vehemently complains about toy safety, and the woman who would rather take her dad to a movie premiere than George Clooney.

Filled with fascinating insights about Canadians from every province and territory, in cities and towns, of every age, gender and economic standing--and peppered with fun graphs, factoids and quizzes--We Know What You're Thinking is compulsive, must-have reading for all Canadians. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ragging the puck: Not worth reading, Nov 11 2009
By Stewart Kiff (Toronto, ON, Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This book reminds me of a time when I had to manufacture commentary out of a poll that my company had been paid to perform for a client. Inevitably, the data was a bit thin, but we had pages to fill. So I was forced to stretch the data and draw out suggestions that were in fact only suggestions.

Darrell Bricker and John Wright of Ipsos Reid are two excellent pollsters, and I know that because I've listened to them speak and I have seen their analysis on political polls. However, you would never know about their great analysis based on their new book "We know what you're thinking: From dollars to donuts - Canada's Premiere pollsters reveal what Canadians think and why".

Instead of explaining the crucial "Why?" this book comes across very much as a series of leftover analysis that they had a couple of junior researchers "rag the puck" and develop whatever analysis they could without any real substantive thought.

For example, the book is filled with titillating but ultimately useless facts like: 63% of the people in BC give the fashion choice of the Speedos at the beach a thumbs down, while 69 percent give the thumbs down to socks and sandals.

My opinion is: "So what?" First of all, the difference is probably within your margin of error. And given that this question is not really a salient top of mind issue, least of all for the apparently oblivious socks and sandal wearer; the question is what are you really measuring in this survey anyway? Ultimately, without context, and it had better be some pretty interesting context, who cares?

These questions are not answered in this book and for that reason, I am giving it two out of five stars. Two stars because obviously, this is a competent and thoughtful piece but only two out of five because I just can't get any real value out of reading this. It leaves no farther ahead in understanding Canada or its people other than to leave in part of me fairly useless information that on a certain day, at a certain time, to a certain question, a number of people in BC thought Speedos were less appalling fashion choices that socks and sandals.
