Product Description

Album Description

Named after a key line in Arthur Lee's "The Red Telephone" (itself a steal from the then-fashionable play Marat/Sade, also parodied by the Bonzo Dog Band in their freakout classic "We Are Normal"), the extremely uneven Love tribute We're All Normal and We Want Our Freedom at least sidesteps the common tribute band malady of songs that sound like the original versions, only not quite as good. Nearly all 21 bands on the compilation interpret Lee's songs in their own styles, a good thing since a band probably couldn't sound like Love's unique blend of hard rock and easy listening if they tried. The question is, can Lee's songs make the transition comfortably, or more to the point, whether these are bands who should be attempting Lee's songs in the first place. Unfortunately, the answer in about a third of these tracks is, "no, they shouldn't," with Love Battery's "No Matter What You Do" and Gobblehoof's plain, wretched "Alone Again Or" the most obvious culprits. However, the tracks by Teenage Fanclub, the Television Personalities, Eggs, and especially David Kilgour and Martin Phillips' sublime reading of "A Message to Pretty" are all excellent. They're not a patch on the originals, of course, but they show what can happen when a good band and an interesting cover come together. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

1.0 out of 5 stars BEWARE!, Jan 2 2004
This review is from: We Re All Normal (Audio CD)
this is THE WORST tribute cd i've ever heard. oh man! this is AWFUL! it's unbelievable that after these songs were turned in, some clueless fool ACTUALLY put this abomination out! it's all CRAP! even the television personalities and teenage fanclub turned in 3rd rate throw away muck! the other bands? - who cares! all SUPER LAME indie rock nobody morons. absolutely horrible. i wonder if ANY of these bands have actually listened to a LOVE album. this cd should not exist. do not buy this cd! stick with the first 6 LOVE albums: "love", "da capo", "forever changes", "four sail", "out here", and "false start".

1.0 out of 5 stars Buy the originals, April 14 1999

I'm sure that the bands on this album all performed these songs out of respect for the great band Love. But as seems to happen often, this sort of "tribute" ends up being a slaughtering of the original music. These bands have not improved upon Love's originals by any stretch of the imagination. If you have not yet discovered Love, please go buy Forever Changes, or better yet, get Rhino's box set which includes Forever Changes plus all of the essential stuff from their other albums.

This tribute translates psychedelia to grunge. I LOVE this tribute. First of all it was one of the first of the glut of tributes. It seems that the bands all really were influenced by the band LOVE. Arthur Lee himself is really into this tribute and it's obvious that it wasn't done to take advantage of Lee's popularity. There's a refreshing niavity to it, I'm not sure they knew what they were doing or how impactful the medium of 'tribute album' could be. I love Love and while the originals are great, there's something to a group of inexperienced but passionate musicians forging ahead by paying homage to their roots. Enjoy...

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice tribute but I much prefer LOVE in the flesh., Feb 7 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: We Re All Normal (Audio CD)
This is a nice tribute to Arthur Lee and Love, one of the most influential 60's bands to emerge from the West Coast. However, I must say that I much prefer Love performing their material. This gives the listener a good overview of the composing ability and lyric poetics of Arthur Lee and Love, although, the musicianship does not stand up very well compared to the actual band. This is a nice addition for any Love collector to add to their collection, but if you want a true look at Arthur Lee & Love I would recommed the following: Vindicator by Arthru Lee, Love 1st recording, De Capo, Forever Changes, Four Sail, Out There, and Revisited, all by LOVE.
