Book Description

Oct 15 2010

Gordon Bannerman, Francis Godon, Corinne Kernan S?vigny, Nellie Rettenbacher.

The names are ordinary, almost anonymous. These men and women could be from anywhere, from anytime, related to anyone. But they are far from ordinary; they are Canadian veterans of the Second World War. And now, their stories are being told.

Compiled and edited by The Historica-Dominion Institute, We Were Freedom: Canadian Stories of the Second World War is a remarkable collection of oral histories that pays tribute to the men and woman who served in Canada’s greatest military effort. Ernest Peter Bone remembers flight training in Manitoba; Cyril Roach recalls the Allied invasion of Normandy; Helen Jean Crawley describes her work as a searchlight operator; Joseph Friedman tells of his experiences as a prisoner of war. Accompanying these deeply personal stories is a wealth of archival material?photographs, medals, letters, newspaper clippings, identity cards and more.

In turns moving, horrifying, and heartwarming, We Were Freedom is an exceptional piece of history?a record of the men and women who fought and suffered in order to preserve our way of life.

About the Author

The Historica-Dominion Institute is a national charitable organization that was launched in September 2009 through the amalgamation of two existing organizations: The Historica Foundation of Canada and The Dominion Institute. The Historica Foundation of Canada was launched in October 1999 with a mission to help all Canadians come to know the fascinating stories that make our country unique. The Dominion Institute was formed in 1997 by a group of young professionals, concerned about the erosion of a common memory and civic identity in Canada.

Since 2001, The Memory Project has worked to connect veterans and students online and in classrooms across the country. The Memory Project Speakers’ Bureau includes 1,500 veteran volunteers from across Canada visiting classrooms and community groups to share their stories with youth. The veterans in The Memory Project represent a wide range of conflicts, including World War I, World War II, Korean War, Peacekeeping Operations and Canadian Forces experiences. The Memory Project Digital Archive, an online database that houses the oral histories and artifacts of more than 1000 Canadian veterans, complements the Speakers’ Bureau. To date, these veterans have reached more than 300,000 young people.

I watch lots of sports with each sport having their own Hall Of Fame to recognize the heroes of the sport.

But never, never, never has there been, heroes that mean so much to me as the CANADIAN Men and Women who fought and died for our country.

I do not understand why, these brave men and women are only recognized on one day, November 11th. What about the rest of the year?

Each town and city in Canada needs its own Canadian Military Hall of Recognition. Cost to build one should not even be a factor here.
Ask yourself this, did a Canadian war vet ever take days off because they were tired, hungry, scared, or wounded, NO! They mustered the Canadian courage inside themselves, and finished the job. Much to the amazement of the enemy and the other allied forces!

How could anyone attach a monetary cost to this is beyond me. Except governments of modern day society.

Governments in Canada are clawing back at the costs associated with our Canadian war veterans, this must stop now.

The Canadian Military Halls of Recognition would be a living classroom, speaking to all who entered its doors, and opening the eyes of the young to the bravery and ultimate sacrifice they paid. CANADIANS...BRAVE CANADIANS...PROUD CANADIANS.

Purchasing books are a means to 'read' the Canadian war history, but a Canadian Military Hall of Recognition building would be to "FEEL IT".

They deserve no less from us, their fellow Canadians.

Thank You to all of them.
