provocative,

This review is from: Wealth And Poverty Of Nations (Paperback)
Timely topic and very opinionated. It examines global history in the last 1,000 years more from a cultural point view. Its analysis on the Western history is more interesting. But its insights on the Asian history are less penetrating. A far better work on this topic is this: China's global reach: markets, multinationals, and globalization by a Chinese journalist George Zhibin Gu, which offers sweeping views on current China and global affairs.

Outstanding Economic History,

This is a great review of western economic history. Mr. Landes combines moral and social aspects of European societies, to help explain economic results.

Simply Idiotic,
By laklak (laklak) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wealth And Poverty Of Nations (Paperback)
Though I enjoyed Landes' humour sometimes, this book is by no means an honest endeavour to answer the question posed by the title. The work is mostly rhetoric. Though I agree with some of his conclusions but his arguments are almost always fellacious. This is my first history reading and I have almost no background on the subject. Still after few chapters it became clear that the book does not meet the criteria of an academic writing. It is a shame for Harvard that Landes carries its credentials!
