Book Description

Oct 25 2012

Wearing the “C” insignia on the uniform—a badge of honor reserved for team captains—is professional hockey’s highest honor, and this study discusses how many of the NHL’s all-time greatest players were captains. This exciting new book—an entertaining and enlightening blend of hockey stories and leadership lessons—reveals the secrets of hockey’s greatest captains by asking questions such as What does it take to lead a team to championship? What are the keys to overcoming unexpected adversity? and How does a captain manage strong egos from diverse backgrounds into a unified, focused team? To get the inside story, author Ross Bernstein interviewed more than 100 of the all-time greatest captains, assistant captains, and head coaches, including Wayne Gretzky, Scotty Bowman, Phil Esposito, and Joe Sakic. An ideal book for any hockey fan, this work recounts some of the greatest moments in NHL history.

1.0 out of 5 stars beyond boring April 12 2013
By Brian Maitland TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Could have been so much better. How about asking some truly hard-hitting questions about captains? Like why was Mark Messier considered a great leader when he won yet somehow despite not leading his teams to the playoffs for the last seven seasons of his career. In fact, Messier's teams' W-L "record" as a captain over those seasons was almost 100 games under .500.

Or how about talking about when Mike Modano got stripped of the "C" on his jersey and Brendan Morrow became the captain of the Dallas Stars?

There are also far too many comments from players who were never captains as though being an assistant captain was enough to know the ins and outs of captaincy on a hockey team.

Anyway, this is a great topic and given the number of interviews done should have turned out far more insightful and revealing on the subject.

Grew up watching hockey, so thought at the least i'd learn a bit about the players i idolized. I did, but beyond that i wouldn't say it isn't very useful to a manager. The theme stitched through the whole book is that Captains "walk the talk", yah i know that. Wouldn't have made it this long as a manager if i didn't do that already.
