Book Description

Nov 1 2012 0863159257 978-0863159251 3rd Revised edition
This wonderful little book covers everything you need to know about the types of plants known as weeds. Ehrenfried Pfeiffer discusses the different varieties of weeds, how they grow and what they can tell us about soil health. The process of combatting weeds is discussed in principle as well as in practice, so that it can be applied to any situation. First written in the 1950s, this is still one of the best overviews of the subject available.

3.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing idea, but lacking Dec 11 2012

The concept is fascinating --- that the types of weeds on a farm can tell you what's wrong with your soil and/or management techniques. However, I ultimately found the book disappointing, mostly because the actual data could be summed up on a single page. The rest of the short book was devoted to very obvious or very environmentally-unfriendly techniques of weed control, plus descriptions of weeds that weren't sufficient to work as a field guide and also didn't add much to the thesis.

I was hoping that an updated edition would be modern, but I think all the editors did was add in a brief introduction and then introduce a lot of typos. (Maybe the typos were in the original --- I don't know.) The price seemed very high for 90 pages.
