Special Features

Depending on how you liked this romantic comedy, you just might find more laughs in the delightful banter between the director and his two stars on the commentary track. Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant join writer-director Marc Lawrence for a lively 102 minutes of conversation. Not much movie magic is discussed, but the three talents will sacrifice all for a good joke. It's best to watch the commentary track with the "Two Bleeps Notice" viewing option: when a heart appears on-screen, you can immediately view outtakes from that stage of the film. The flubs, on-set antics, and jokes are all guaranteed to bring a laugh. Other extras include two additional scenes (the wedding finale was judiciously cut) and a HBO puff-piece on the making of the film. Yet the disc is a must-have for any fan of Bullock or Grant because it offers a chance to listen in on them; they're just as charming off-screen as on. --Doug Thomas

4.0 out of 5 stars My GOD!!! Have none of you ever been in love??? July 1 2004
I'm shocked by the reviews I'm reading of this film! I must say, anyone who's ever been in love with someone, particularly if that person is your best friend, in addition to being your worst enemy, this film will SPEAK to you.
I won't lie that this film falls victim to the formulaic conventions of most romatic-comedies, but the screenwriter presents the characters in such a way that you forgive it all. Both of the primary characters are entirely sympathetic in all aspects, even the rich, handsome, bastardly Grant.
At the end, you adore Bullock for much the reason Grant does. Despite her nerosies and non-sense, her heart is in the right place. And while Grant's character is less-sympathetic, you truly regard him as an unwitting villian... one by way of creation, rather than one by way of nature.
Ultimately, it's a story for adults and an adult love... the sort that smacks you in the face, just when you think that you're too old to fall victim to emotion versus rationale. The scene where they pick through one another's lunches speaks volumes to any person who's ever loved someone they hated. How could you love someone who loves beets? Maybe because they love beets when you don't.
I recommend this film highly for anyone looking for a good laugh and sporadic cry on a Friday night. Overall, lovely, brilliant performances... and a script worth lauding, if for nothing else, because it makes such frustrating characters so entirely human.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite good!! Jan. 12 2004
I thought that this film had a rather unusual storyline, although the outcome of the relationship between the main characters was quite predictable! I did enjoy it, and found myself cracking up.
Good points: Along with all the character flaws both Wade and Kelson have, the film is careful to develop redeemable character traits along the way as well, making both characters human rather than unsalvageably neurotic. Very human in-fact, I know people in real life like these two. They're also careful to show that both characters do actually have similar interests in life so it's not completely head-scratching to see them falling for each other. Oh and the romance is never sappy, so for those who are a fan of subtle expressions, furtive glances and baffled reactions, this is the film for you. Bullock and Grant might be playing their usual roles but those roles are definitely very compatible, at least in this film. Chemistry is present and makes the film work.
So by all means go out and buy this film. I think that if you're into romantic comedies, you'll love this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rom-coms have had their day says a rom-com fan. Dec 28 2003
By Meesha
A seemingly great movie from the excellent Marc Lawrence, starring the lovely Sandra Bullock, along with the ubiquitous Hugh Grant. Could you think of a more perfect film? I can. Miss Congeniality is one of my all-time favourite movies, Sandra Bullock is my favourite actress, and Hugh Grant . . . Who doesn't like Hugh Grant?
But this film is a movie too far. There's nothing original about this film. OK, it's pleasant enough to watch. But there's nothing new, it's not thought provoking, and both Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock are getting very overly typecast in their roles. And they're not doing anything to stop themselves being typecast. I own quite a few Sandra Bullock films, and she's the same in every single film - the girl next door who's a major klutz, and always gets the guy in the end. Hugh Grant is the exact same. Apparently, his role in Bridget Jones's Diary was more of a "bad guy" role. I don't think so somehow.
Anyone could have thought up this story. No offence to Marc Lawrence, but he needs to expand his ideas a bit, and not choose predictable storylines. You know Sandra & Hugh are going to get together at the end of the film, despite all the obstacles that are thrown in their way (in the shape of Alicia Witt). They start off hating each other, and finish the film madly in love. Now, where have I heard that one before?
Hugh and Sandra make a good couple on-screen, and judging by their antics during the extras, make a good couple off screen. Which has sparked many a rumour about them actually being a couple in the press. But they just get on extremely well, and you laugh watching them not being able to look each other in the eye without laughing and ruining the take.
The extras are pretty basic.

This movie is hilarious and Sandra Bullock takes it a cut above the usual romantic comedy. Handsome Hugh Grant and quirky Sandra Bullock make up this thoroughly enjoyable movie, from Lucy (Bullock) ordering huge portions of Chinese and laying under wrecking balls in protest, to George (Grant) and his little boy attitude. A delightful watch. Enjoyed this movie as much or more than "While You Were Sleeping" also starring Bullock. A must see for a Sandra Bullock fan (me)!!!
Favorite Quotes:
Lucy Kelson: You are the most selfish human being on the planet!
George Wade: Well that's just silly. Have you met everyone on the planet?
George Wade: Well, we obviously can't leave you alone with that stapler.
Helen Wade: Would you like anything?
George Wade: I could really go for some Milk Duds.
Helen Wade: We don't have any, I could send out for one.
George Wade: Oh no, don't be ridiculous. If you're going to send out, get a whole box.
Lucy Kelson: Please don't tell me you called me out of a wedding to pick out a suit!
Enjoy the movie! You'll love it, promise!
