A fresh, funny new voice, Meg Federico showcases her keen eye for the absurd in this poignant, hilarious, and timely account of one daughter’s tumultuous journey caring for her aging parents.

When Meg Federico’s eighty-year-old mother and newly minted step-father were forced to accept full-time home care, she imagined them settling into a Norman-Rockwellian life of docile dependency. With a family of her own and a full time career in Nova Scotia – a thousand miles away from her parents – Federico hoped they would be able to take care of themselves for the most part, and call on their children when they really needed them – but of course that’s not quite what happens.

As she watches with horror from the sidelines, Federico’s parents turn into terrible teens. Fighting off onslaughts of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, Addie and Walter, forbidden by doctors to drink, conspire to order cases of scotch by phone; Addie’s attendant accuses the evening staff of midnight voodoo; Walter’s inhibitions decline as dementia increases and mail-order sex aides arrive at the front door. The list of absurdities goes on and on as Federico tries to take some control over her parents’ lives – and her own.

This is a story for the huge generation – nearly 76 million people – now dealing with the care of their parents. You’ll laugh and cry as you read this powerful and important debut.

Review

"Acerbically funny, unflinching and direct."
Vancouver Sun

"[A] frank account, by turns sad and terribly funny . . . Federico gently delineates the humiliating burden caused by the loss of memory, while humanely portraying a brave new sympathy and understanding between her mother and herself."
Publishers Weekly (starred review)

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful read - poignant, witty and real Feb 13 2009
By H. Rose
Format:Hardcover
Ms Federico has written a book that will speak to all of us, whether we are child, parent or both. She has successfully painted the picture of caring for a disabled and dying parent; the joy, the exasperation and the irony. Incredibly, she has been able to do this with the wit and self reflection that we would all need in that position. There are pearls in this book that I will carry with me forever. Bravo!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Mothering Mother Hits Home May 6 2009
Format:Hardcover
Meg Federico walks the reader through a world of brilliant lunacy peppered with the tenderness and love that threads all family relationships. Baby-boomers will relate to her experiences as she navigates through the new territory of a mentally dysfunctional mother and an equally mad step-father, both of whom are declared competent by the authorities. Torn between her duties as a wife and mother, Meg fiercely fights to be a good daughter. This book is not a runaway tale or over the top with humour but is a bittersweet story of one family's journey into the amazing world of mental and physical decline in their dearly beloved elders. It is an insightful read for those who have an aging parent with similar issues. Both comforting and sad with moments for awkward giggles as bizarre social scenes play out, Welcome to the Departure Lounge is recommended for those of us on this inevitable path and serves to remind of the truly special connection we could and should have with our aged parents.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can relate April 28 2009
Format:Hardcover
Wow. I can relate to this great book, we currently have my mother-in-law living with us (for 10 years now), and the last few have been like a roller coaster ride for all concerned due to health issues and aging in general. I also was the care giver for my elderly great aunt whom I cared for until her death last year.

Thanks for writing it.
