This collection contains four Matt Dennis albums from the 1950s, more than half his recorded output: 1. Matt Dennis Plays & Sings (originally released in 1958); 2. She Dances Overhead (1955); 3. Dennis Anyone? (1955); and 4. Welcome Matt (1959).
The remasterings sound fine to my aging ears. Suffice it to say that these recordings are superior to the recordings from 55-year-old lps I have heard before, in the same way that most recent reissues of old music sound better than the scratchy old records. (I love the sound of well-cared-for, well-cleaned vinyl. I am not arguing against vinyl!)
Read Will Friedwald on Matt Dennis if you want to get interested in him. Stellar song-writer, sophisticated arranger and self-accompanist on the piano, and subtly swinging singer. . . he makes it sound so easy, but it wasn't.
Jasmine Music has done us a favor, making these albums available again.
